Im [F22] struggling to break off a romantic relationship [M25]

I have known H (M25) for about 2 years, I have gone out with him for about 1 year and a half but only started taking things seriously since 6 months ago. We didnt get sriously before because when I met H he had recently broken off a 6 year relationship under very delicate circumstances. When I met him he was a mess. He was struggling with addiction and he was living with his grandfather and without a stable job.

For obvious reasons I didnt wasnt interested in a relationship back then. But we were both having a hard time with life in generally, and after a bad break up, and we made each other company. Slowly I started falling in love, I discovered he was incredibly sweet and one of the most intelligent persons I knew. We met while participating in an activist group we both form part of, we have the same moral values and being with him makes me actually believe in life. But the same way I discovered how amazing he was, I discovered all his faults too. He is not an easy person, no addict is ever an easy person.

By the time I started caring for him I finally realized what an addict really is and how serious addiction actually is. I coul describe all the thing he put me and our friends and his family through, but i guess you can imagine.

Since about half a year ago he finally seemed to get his shit together and started making some progress. I love him and im really proud of him. I dont resent his struggles since I know what his childhood was like, its amazing he is as good as he is, and im not a stranger to what a har childhood turn you into, Im not an easy person myself either. But recently he has had to stop going to therapy because of economic issues and a lot of the same old problems return, mainly his anger issues.

Im not okay either and lately we have just been hurting each other. I'm at a poit where I just have no more energy left. Not just beause of this. My own life is a mess, and I have so many unresolved issues that a good relationship would be difficult even if he were perfect. I love him and I know I want a future with him, but the more I think about it the more convinced I am that if it will happen it will happen in a few years and not right now.

It sucks to say it but the truth is im just simply tired. I love him and I want to be there for him and support him but I dont want, rather I cant, deal with his shit anymore. Im sure he will get better, he already has. Its just ive tried being there for the process and it just sucks. It doesnt make the love any stronger, it just makes us hurt each other.

I know this doesnt depend on me and I know he probably wont view it the same way as I. I know he wants to stay together and keep trying. And its not that im giving up on this relationship. I dont want to. Im trying to be pragmatist and face the fact that I dont think we will make it if we keep trying, that I think it may work if we try when we've made some progress on the unresolved issues we have.

He has just today signed a contract for a very good work and is trying to finish his studies. And I find myself thinking that I dont want to say anything right now because it may make him feel bad in the one moment he needs to be on top of his game. But then I also think that I am always talking care of him. And i dont want this dynamic to be set in stone forever. I really think we need to give each other time and if things are right and better in some time, maybe even 1 year or more, we could try again. I just dont feel like I have the energy to keep going but I also dont want to lose this.

Does it make sense what im saying? Can that work? Im lost in what even may be the right or wrong thing to do
