Do you love surprises? When the imperial decree arrived announcing two episodes instead of the single one promised by the original Tencent calendar, I was faced with a choice: elaborate on episode 13 alone, or include 14 but keep things the meager length of a lip balm. After watching episode 14, it felt like something we’d all want to talk about immediately so here’s an image-centric offering, plus infinite space in the comments for anything you’ve picked up along the way.
Hey Siri, play The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.
Episodes 11-12 | Episodes 9-10
Episodes 7-8 | Episode 6 | Episodes 4-5
Masterpost and Episodes 1-3
Spoilers
⚠️ If you’d like to discuss episode 15 or share details from the novel, please tag your spoiler. Protect it like the only surviving heir with no martial arts skills and 36 enemies. Major reveals from episodes 1-14 are fair game. ⚠️

I make sure to post daily, but it has to be by 4:30 pm Pacific Time. Whatever I’ve written by then is all I can share. Available is better than comprehensive. 😏
Key events
● The miners are rescued from the pits of hell.

● Meng Huaijin commits suicide after writing a confession letter to save his father’s political career.

Visual Roundup
Is anybody else here raised by Eminem, saw this sequence, and mentally performed, “So won’t the real Shen Zaiye please stand up, please stand up, please stand up?”
Plotting mischief like old times, not knowing the story was already setting the stage for a goodbye neither of them asked for.
As much as I’m sad for Zhenzhen, I won’t pretend Huaijin’s employee benefits package included unlimited vacations, dental insurance, or lung cancer screening. Silver ore often occurs in combination with lead, arsenic, and other heavy metals. Miners may inhale fine dust containing silica, arsenic, or even radioactive particles, all known or probable carcinogens.
He's playing no games.
The double entendre. By “match,” Zhenzhen really meant the showdown between Shen Zaiye and the Crown Prince, backed by the Mengs. Prince Wuyin enjoys the spectacle. He watches power struggles like other people watch palace dramas. Oh, wait!
The smiles that launched a thousand fanfics.
The intimacy of smoothing a part of another man’s robe. Huaijin is showing love in the only language they’re allowed to speak.
Eat, drink, and be merry.
Lian’s brother could no longer make it back, but he left something behind. A parting gift. Taohua worries that her brother will also end up holding nothing but a memory of her, instead of a reunion.
I kept wondering why Zaiye stopped to make eye contact with the shooter, then just stood there like a sitting duck. I also questioned why Taohua let him go outside instead of keeping him safe indoors. Turns out, they each had their own motives.
In episode 12, Taohua told Qingtai, “If we wish to win him over, we must offer a token of allegiance. One that will leave no doubt in his mind of my loyalty. One decisive move.” This is it.
A slap, a wake‑up call; only wetter.
The curtain call before everything falls apart.
Huaijin is dying and still thinking about Zhenzhen despite knowing full well that “I promise” is dad-speak for “good luck with that.”
She’s near her tipping point.
Prince Wuhen’s “bitch, please” face when Prince Wugou said he admits his mistake and won’t do it again. This is after Prince Wugou got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, melted chocolate chips on his mouth, crumbs all over his robe, and he still had the audacity to claim innocence.
Prince Wuhen’s “bitch, please” face when Chancellor Meng Zhongyan claims he has no ambition; that he’s old, weak, and just wants to retire to the countryside. Sure, Jan.
Shen Zaiye knows the emperor still prefers to play palace chess, but Zaiye tries to seek justice anyway. The whole thing felt awkward, like a guy proposing marriage in public, assuming there’s no way she’d say no, and then she absolutely does.
That’s no longer Lady Jiang for you.
