How YRF and team should have gone about the promotions of War 2

Discuss

I disagree with YRF's strategy with regards to War 2 promotions. They have been very lazy with it. "Less is more" is a great philosophy but there are still different ways to implement this. It doesn't mean you should be lazy with your ideas.

Let's talk about their current promotion timeline:

They released the teaser in May, which was criticized by the audience for looking generic and having bad VFX. They got off to a bad start here.

Next, they released some posters. Again, many people complained that these posters looked low effort.

Then, came the trailer. Now, that was really good. They didn't reveal the story. The visuals looked vastly improved from the teaser. And it finally appeared that the movie has some soul and is not just a generic, template churnout as feared from the earlier teaser.

Then, the song Aavan Jaavan. Again, low effort stuff from Pritam. Comparisons would obviously be drawn to Ghungroo and this didn't do much to help the film.

Then, the dance-off song's teaser. This one was much-awaited. I think this had a positive effect.

Then, a short pre-release dialogue promo. Decent stuff.

Then, the public event in Hyderabad, which was a big success.

I think they could have easily done some things differently to create more hype around the film and reduce some of the negativity and criticism.

Here's what I think they should have done differently:

  1. Scrap the teaser from May. Instead, release two teasers - one in May and one in June.

Let the first teaser feature only Jr NTR's character (Vikram). Keep it a short montage with voice over from Ashutosh Rana.

Let the second teaser be for Hrithik Roshan's character. They should have used the post-credits scene from Tiger 3 here as a teaser. That was wonderfully shot and would be more beneficial using it a couple of months before release instead of being used a post-credits scene in a movie from two years ago. For a 2025 movie, you build hype in 2025, not 2023.

  1. Make more effort with the posters. Some of the fanmade posters are amazing. Make the official ones at the same quality.

  2. No changes with respect to the trailer. That was awesome. Can't change the mediocre song Aavan Jaavan now, so that can stay too. Other stuff remains the same like the dance-off teaser and the dialogue promo.

  3. Make at least one public appearance for the Hindi audience too in Mumbai or Delhi. Do at least one joint interview with the two stars or make an appearance in Kapil Sharma's show or something.

  4. Emphasize strongly and repeatedly in your promotions that there is a strong story in the film and don't just market it as a pure action film. They did this in the Hyderabad event but it should have been done a lot more from the beginning.

I think with only a few changes to the strategy, you still follow the "less is more" philosophy, but a lot more people are excited for your film. I think they faltered in terms of promoting it due to their laziness. However, I hope the film is really good and that positive word of mouth can help it reach its massive expectations.
