# Pre Ramble

**The Problem Every GM Faces Eventually**

Picture this. The Ranged Warrior.

You have a player that is highly optimized for ranged combat. Scope modifications, Max Skill ranged feats... the works. The first few encounters where they pick off enemies from 400 yards is cinematic and fun.

Then it becomes **every** *other* encounter.

While your *sniper* is having a blast, the rest of your table starts checking their phones. Outdoor combat usually becomes "watch the ranger solve problems while we make ten stealth checks to maybe get involved."

You could nerf ranged combat, but that punishes player agency. You could start trying to make the majority of fighting in close-quarters scenarios, but that feels artificial. Or... you could flip the script entirely.

# Enter the Reverse Chase

What if **instead** of stopping ranged combat, you made it the **centerpiece** while keeping everyone engaged?

The reverse chase does exactly that. Unlike traditional skill challenges where each round presents a new obstacle, the reverse chase maintains **constant pressure** (enemies firing from cover) while **varying the environmental factors** each round.

The result? Your sniper gets their tactical firefight, but everyone needs to contribute to survive it.

# Case Study: The Ruined Citadel

**The Setup:**

*The ruins of an ancient city stretch before you, crumbling sentinels of a forgotten age. A central hill rises where the wealthy once lived, now occupied by something far less civilized.*

*While investigating signs of recent bandit activity, a flash of sunlight on steel warns you just in time. The first arrow barely misses, but dozens more are already in the air.*

*Three dozen enemies have you in their sights from prepared positions 1,000 feet away. Between you and them: twisting streets, unstable ruins, and a killing field designed to stop exactly what you're trying to do.*

**Challenge Framework:**

* **Difficulty**: Medium (4 successes before 3 failures)
* **Base DC**: 14 (escalating +1 each round)
* **The Twist**: Everyone must contribute to advance, but ranged characters get to shine

\---

# Round 1: The Onslaught

*The air fills with whistling death as arrows arc toward your position.*

**Environmental Factors:**

* Initial surprise and shock
* Open ground with minimal cover
* Enemies have range and elevation advantage
* Arrow volleys creating area denial

**The Question:** *"How do you respond to the wave of arrows bearing down on you?"*

**Sample Approaches:**

* **Acrobatics (DC 14)**: Dive and weave through incoming fire
* **Survival (DC 14)**: Instinctively break sight lines and find micro-cover
* **Arcana (DC 14)**: Wind magic to deflect arrows mid-flight
* **Athletics (DC 14)**: Sprint for substantial cover
* **Perception (DC 14)**: Spot shooter positions and safe approach routes

# Round 2: Traps in the Streets

*Ancient stones shift treacherously underfoot while arrows continue raining down.*

**Environmental Factors:**

* Difficult terrain slowing advance
* Hidden hazards and unstable footing
* Enemies adjusting aim as you move
* Narrow passages creating chokepoints

**The Question:** *"How do you overcome the traps while staying ahead of the arrows?"*

**Sample Approaches:**

* **Investigation (DC 15)**: Spot and avoid ancient traps
* **Acrobatics (DC 15)**: Navigate treacherous terrain gracefully
* **Stealth (DC 15)**: Use rubble and shadows to mask approach
* **Athletics (DC 15)**: Power through obstacles with brute force

# Round 3: Overlapping Fields of Fire

*Every angle seems covered, every approach watched. The enemy knows their business.*

**Environmental Factors:**

* Enemies in mutually supporting positions
* Limited windows for return fire
* Coordinated enemy tactics
* Perfect opportunity for counter-sniping

**The Question:** *"The enemy is dug in. What can you do to help get that crucial shot?"*

**Sample Approaches:**

* **Deception (DC 16)**: Shout false orders to create enemy confusion
* **Investigation (DC 16)**: Find paths offering better sight lines
* **Perception (DC 16)**: Wait for enemies to duck behind cover
* **Intimidation (DC 16)**: Suppressing fire to keep heads down
* **Insight (DC 16)**: Coordinate to help another player get the shot

# Round 4: The Open Square

*Debris has funneled you into an exposed plaza. Enemy fire intensifies.*

**Environmental Factors:**

* Minimal cover in exposed area
* Concentrated enemy fire
* Desperation driving bold actions
* Final push before reaching enemy positions

**The Question:** *"Open ground with nowhere to hide. What's your move?"*

**Sample Approaches:**

* **Acrobatics (DC 17)**: Impossible agility through concentrated fire
* **Performance (DC 17)**: Coordinate dramatic movements to confuse targeting
* **Arcana (DC 17)**: Magical concealment or barriers
* **Intimidation (DC 17)**: Charge with such ferocity enemies lose composure
* **Athletics (DC 17):** Grab a Chunk of Wall / Shield and block incoming arrows

# Why This Works Better

# The Magic Formula

**Constant Catalyst + Changing Environment = Dynamic Tension**

Traditional skill challenges: New problem each round
Reverse chase: Same pressure, evolving tactical situation

# Player Engagement Benefits

* **Ranged specialists** get their tactical firefight
* **Support characters** provide crucial assistance
* **Melee fighters** have clear advancement goals
* **Spellcasters** find creative applications for their abilities
* **Everyone** contributes meaningfully each round

# The Respond and React Phase

After each round, describe how the ongoing firefight evolves:

*"As the ranger's arrow finds its mark, two archers on the left flank duck lower behind their parapet..."*

*"The wizard's wind spell not only deflects arrows but kicks up a dust cloud, giving the advancing fighter crucial concealment..."*

This creates a living battlefield where player choices have visible consequences.

# Design Principles That Transfer

1. **Maintain Constant Pressure**: The core threat never changes, just the tactical situation
2. **Rotate Skill Requirements**: Each round should favor different character types
3. **Environmental Storytelling**: Let the setting provide both narrative and mechanical challenges
4. **Collaborative Success**: Individual victories should enable team advancement
5. **Escalating Stakes**: Increase difficulty as environmental factors compound

# What's Next

This reverse chase concept works for any scenario where you need sustained pressure with tactical variety:

* Naval combat between ships under cannon fire
* Urban pursuit through sniper-infested rooftops
* Wilderness encounters with dangerous game that fights back
* Siege assaults against fortified positions

The framework adapts beautifully because the core principle remains constant: **same threat, evolving battlefield**.

This is the first in an upcoming series exploring skill challenge variants that solve specific table problems. Next up: branched challenges for when the party splits up, and cooperative challenges where different groups must coordinate across distance.

*Have you dealt with ranged combat dominance at your table? How did you handle it? Drop your experiences in the comments - I'm always looking for new wrinkles to add to these frameworks.*
