Neither left nor right

I stood at a fork in the road

and wondered which direction to take

to the right

gunfire

punctured the air

and I, being cautious, dared not venture there

to the left

a crowd,

with voices shill

bayed like hyenas surrounding a kill

I stood at a fork in the road

and sighed

for I could take neither left nor right

instead

I began to retrace my steps

with the middle way

ever in sight
