cultural appropriation and broader implications
As noted by my earlier post, the popular opinion seems to be that a white person who chooses to wear a durag offends Black culture. Regardless of any individual opinion, the popular opinion is that I should not wear it in public. So, I won't. I don't want the social recourse and potential violence that comes from it. I also am not looking to offend people.
I'm curious on some broader implications of race and culture. Food for thought, if you will.
If a white guy were to sport waves in public, is this offensive? It begs the question, should a white person act white? Yet, that next question is a slippery slope given the state of white supremacy today.
If a white guy wears a scarf of hispanic details/ornation, is that offensive? (I am half hispanic, and I have worked on my grandpa's farms for the earlier 10 years of my life) Who is allowed to be offended? Who has a say? Only Hispanic people, or any person?
Who is allowed to be offended if a white person wears a durag? Who has a say? Only Black people, or any person?
If the answer to both previous questions is yes, only the group in which the culture originates, then I ask: what is white culture? In one word, we might define it as "privilege," but is that how white people should represent themselves? Most definitely not. So, how should white people act? Should white people never be offended?
TL;DR: Race is a social construct that we as individuals give power. At the end of the day, we are all a part of the human race, and on the team of believers in better times ahead.
