Tahi FM is shutting at the end of the month (no surprises); NZ on Air is pushing for podcast style content over radio and homegrown broadcasted media; & RNZ leadership calls FM and also RNZ itself ‘legacy media’.
I’m curious if other people are noticing this defeatist narrative as a means to justify an end? It seems like that there has been a recent uptick in interest for local media platforms outside of the internet.
Maybe that’s me being nostalgic, but I really miss C4 and when radio stations had a presence at free outdoor gigs.

It also feels like 95bFM has had quite a different sound over the past year and a bit. I’ve noticed a lot of new hosts and younger voices, as well as the music choices switching up. Also, it seems like there’s a lot more talking on some of the day shows, some of it interesting, some of it not.

Who are the journos and arts and culture reporters you like? And what radio shows or stations should I listen to? Are there any good print publications to get into? I miss critiques and reviews that weren’t afraid to be negative.
Am Auckland-based but can stream other stations if not on FM.
I don’t want to listen to podcasts or subscribe to substack newsletters.

NZ Music/Arts/Culture Media is in trouble, what’s everyone’s reckons?
