As Blood River is a prequel of sorts to those shows, those dramas reveal what happens to some of the characters in the future. It sucks to be spoiled, so please be considerate. ⚠️

Ok, ahem, on with the show.

Still having a nice holiday, this one

I have a confession to make — I nearly quit this drama after the sixth episode. The first six episodes, which I did recap, were a slog to go through, namely because the plot seemed so monotonous — attack, dazzling fight, pursuit, attack, dazzling fight. And me having zero idea who’s who and what’s going on or why I should care.

Well, I'm glad to report that after the seventh episode, Blood River improved a lot, as if the writers finally remembered what made Blood of Youth so good in the first place: the quiet moments where they explore the bonds between our characters and the deep dilemmas that they have to deal with in this crazy jianghu.

Let's get on with the show!

Su Muyu is captured; Prince Lanyang is the new target

Prince Lanyang

Political machinations are afoot, and Yi Bu captures Su Muyu, drugging him with a poison that renders him in a trance-like state and without internal energy, then tossing him in prison.

I am 100% unsurprised that Su Changhe decided to take the job that Su Muyu turned down flat — just to get him out of prison.

His first attack on the prince failed because Li Xinyue beat him flat. (It's very cool to see Wu Jie's mother! I love these callbacks to Blood of Youth.)

Women warriors always favour red, apparently

He later barges into a private meeting Lanyang was having with a monk at a temple...

I squeed a little when I saw Wuxin’s master (much younger) talking to Prince Lanyang. They even talked about the young Wuxin and how Lanyang wished for Wuxin to live a normal life (sorry, my prince, ain't gonna happen).

Honestly, each time I see the dashing, younger Prince Lanyang (spoilers from Blood of Youth, please don't click if you have not watched it) >!I feel so sad, and I grit my teeth wondering why all C-drama emperors are such bricks when it comes to identifying their real enemies. It's also kinda depressing that eventually, the bad guys succeed in getting Lanyang killed, all probably quietly supported by the emperor, who has always been insecure about Lanyang's military power. I will always remember my frustration at the emperor lamenting, towards the end, "How disappointed must he have been when I ordered his death!" WELL, DUH!!<

Su Muyu’s Past as the Heir of No-Sword City

As Muyu gives in to the drug, he dreams of his past.

UGH SO SAD

I feel so sad for that kid, who once had a secure life with a family that loved him and a promising future as the heir of No-Sword City. Seeing his father push him away in that little raft when No-Sword City fell... my heart aches a little.

SO SAAAAAAAD

He even hallucinates his father sharing a cell next to him. And my heart, again, broke a little for him when he tries to reassure the hallucination of his dad that despite his difficult life, he had friends by his side. (Do you mean friend, because you're not exactly swimming with trusted buddies in An He.)

\"You suffered so much all these years.\"

\"It's okay, I had friends at my side.\" (Me ugly crying inside as he lies to a hallucination)

So, we know that Muyu's next mission is to get to the bottom of No-Sword City's demise. I wonder, however, why Muyu is reluctant to use his true name, Yue’an. But he certainly has not forgotten how No-Sword City fell or how his father died.

The Chinese New Year Dinner

I loved this flashback, even if it was the saddest thing I've seen. And this is what Blood of Youth excelled at too - that campfire moment with Wuxin, Wu Jie and Xiao Se >!where Wu Xin taught Wu Jie some moves !<, our senior brother Tang Lian's moments with the boys ... things like that.

Whispers: But the writers still can't write romance worth a damn. I feel zero chemistry between Muyu and Miss Miracle Healer.

Anyway, the young Su Changhe and Su Muyu were on a mission when they decided to rest outside a poor woman's house. It was Chinese New Year, and they reminisced about Chinese New Years they'd had. Changhe never had a CNY dinner, while Muyu's CNY dinners were wonderful, but I bet they brought him pain because of what he lost.

Changhe, ever the rogue, initially wanted to steal some food when he smelled something delicious, but Muyu stopped him, reminding him that ordinary people only get one good feast a year.

Unexpectedly, an old woman invited them to share dinner, saying it hurt her heart to see them not at their homes for dinner.

Afterward, they left her what little money they had, watched fireworks together, and for a brief instant, they weren’t assassins or fugitives — just two people basking in the fragile beauty of an ordinary night.

It’s these quiet moments that make Blood of Youth special. Such a small, human moment, yet so much more impactful than those flashy fights.

The Rescue Mission: Unexpected Allies

As Su Muyu’s capture sets events in motion, alliances begin to shift. But never in a million years did I expect Mu Ciling to be recruited to their cause.

Even Mu Ciling found it hilarious that he is being roped in to save Muyu.

(By the way, the new Xie clan head, Xie Qidao, is surprisingly cheerful and sunny for a man raised in the crazy world of Dark River as an assassin.)

Another unexpected addition is the Water Official, who slaughters the rest of the Officials.

Well, it turns out that the whole thing, including Muyu being captured, was part of an elaborate plan. But to do what, exactly? My guess is they know the bad guys will not let them off so easily, and this is their way to wriggle out of the situation.

This is admittedly pretty cool

The episode ends with Muyu using his clan's secret technique to escape from prison.

Random thoughts

I really pity those who do not understand Mandarin, because not only is the subs, well, sub-par, they sometimes decide to not translate complete sentences, as if thinking: "Yeah, they don't really need to know that."

It also massively bugs me that they called "An He" (which literally means Dark River) Blood River.

Minor things but each time the sub pops by on my screen I wanna shake the translator a bit.

Also another pet peeve - I get that it's the trend to make the story gallop from the first episode, but writers keep forgetting the golden rule: Make us care for the characters first. Tell us why we should bother with them. Instead, the show tossed, literally, six episodes of non-stop battles at us.

Imagine how many viewers they'd have lost because of this, especially if they had never seen Blood of Youth or Dashing Youth before.

Ok, rant over!

I'm just glad that the gritty storytelling of BoY is kinda back here.

Wuxin's master!
