Season Rankings: Day 2 - DC2 vs. DC4 (TL;DR at the end)

SpoilerDiscussion:Ellie2:

Season 4 is ending, I never thought I’d see the day

Yesterday, I posted my thoughts on which cast I liked better from the original season 1 and the new season 4 that is posting their final episode on November 8th. I said that I thought DC4 was better in terms of cast and plot, and DC1 scored on the final 3. The people in the comments seemed to think DC1 was better, which is absolutely fine! I am using the same logic here, however I will be comparing Disventure Camp 2 against Carnival of Chaos and look at that in terms of what I did yesterday. If you didn’t see that post, I will put a link at the bottom of this so you can check it out!

Quick disclaimer: This is off the BETA season 2 as at the time of this post, DC2 remake has not premiered yet! Thank you!

Now, on to the scoring, DC2 vs. DC4. Starting with the final 3, I am pretty undecided with this one. Both of them had things that stood out to me. HOWEVER. I feel as if I have to give this to DC2 because there is nothing I love more than a final 3 with a rivalry and a shaky dynamic. The story arc of James and Aiden was interesting to watch. From allies to enemies to James having to LITERALLY POISON SOMEONE to get Aiden to know that he can trust him. On top of that we have Riya the extra who eventually comes to light with her villain arc. Being the nice girl and then halfway through becomes villainous? I like that so much. DC4’s final three, and I will be saying a different thing than last post. I felt like DC4 had different styles clashing at the final 3 from Jade being the social one, Logan being the underdog strategist, and Anastasia being the physical and more chaotic one, the final 3 is diverse, but no story really binds them all like DC2s did.

Now, it’s 1-0 heading into the second criteria: Cast. Now, I know I said DC4 had a better cast than DC1. That is going to hold true for DC2 as well. DC4 gets the point because there are so many archetypes that are present and it’s fun to see where different people collide. For example, Amelie and Hannah. Amelie is the boss who starts off as a mean, controlling dictator (for lack of a better word) to a person who understands what it means to be successful and knows now to not be like how she was. Hannah went from being someone carefree and not understanding what the game is to taking it seriously since she lost her allies and being more careful. To put it into perspective, someone starts out as one thing, but then completely transforms into something different by the time they are eliminated. There are a couple exceptions) DC2, on the other hand. The personalities and dynamics usually don’t shift or shift very little (correct me if I’m wrong). And they are defined by one singular trait. Maggy was “The Bullied Girl”. Ally was “The Gamer”. Yul was “The Korean Dancer” and so on so forth (that changes in the new DC2 posters).

We are 1-1 with our final category: Plot. Now this is a tough one, but I don‘t want to seem like I have recency bias. But before choosing a winner, I’m going to go over what plot things both seasons offered. DC2 offered a couple plot lines for a couple different people. James and Aiden plot, Huntessally plot. Heck, I think even Karol had a plot too since she returned. The emotional storytelling here was amazing, too. I feel as if the narrative was also clear. However, when I talk about DC2, I find it a problem that I always lead back to James and Aiden and don’t give enough spotlight to any of the other cast members. Which is 100% a problem.

DC4, though, that’s a whole other story. Positives? There are many plot lines happening at once (this is also a negative, will explain) that felt completed. Anarissa, Logan’s journey to being Bi, Amelie and Hannah, Vibe Tribe leading into the blossom of Zaivy, I can name a lot of people who had some sort of plot now that they were eliminated. Alliances formed and made it seem like they were going to last, but then crashed and burned, which was cool. Negatives? One word: Complexity. The complexity makes some arcs like Alessio, Lynda, and Diencer very rushed in my opinion. And this kind of lines up with the multiple plot lines. I find it hard to figure out which plot is one to watch for because there are so many happening at once. It gets complicated when we have all of the plot lines to go forward into the stories.

Tough choice. But if I had to give it to one, It’d be the one with the more positives. And here they are: DC2 was more simple, gave less people plots so it was easy to tell main from side or throwaway. DC2 had a clear narrative. DC2 had great emotional storytelling. DC4 had a lot of completed plot lines. DC4’s alliances felt like they had more impact and it was unclear in some moments where someone had to pick a side (Looking at you, Logan). So, with more positives, plot goes to DC2

Which means by another score of 2-1, DC2 (Final 3, Plot) takes the victory over DC4 (Cast)

I would like to take a moment at the end of this to say that if I am contradicting myself in some of these statements, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know so I can clear some stuff up for you. I really hate when I contradict myself and it‘s hard to tell where, so if you could do that, that would be amazing

TL;DR: Disventure Camp 2 wins in the final 3 category because each of them were binded to each other with a storyline. Disventure Camp 4 wins in the cast category due to many different archetypes clashing and unpredictable bonds that somehow worked in the favor. Disventure Camp 2 wins in the plot category, but barely, because though it was more simple, it gave more attention to the stories happening and making little to no character arcs feel rushed

DCAS vs. DC4 tomorrow!
