Let's build the ultimate death metal playlist together!

DISCUSSION

Was reading this post earlier where a u/Dry-Principle-9786 was asking for suggestions on pure and old school death metal. The responses were an absolute masterclass in some of my favorite albums of all time (and some I haven't listened to in a while that will definitely be listened to today) and I thought 'I wish this was a playlist'. The reason I'm not just plucking from that thread directly is that it is mostly full albums and it would take the better part of a month to listen to all of them end to end for a new inductee to the way.

Some years ago my friends and I came up with a concept we call 'The Make or Break 5' where you make a playlist of 5 songs from a band that if you gave it to someone unfamiliar or wasn't a fan that would make them either love'm or cement their distaste for a band.

So here is what I'm proposing - a crowd sourced ultimate death metal playlist where no band can have more than 5 songs on it. This is a LOT harder than you think (and funny enough probably has a lot to do with when you heard the band for the first time and how formative it was for you).

As an example I already had a MoB5 for the band Death I made a few years ago for a friend and I put:

- The Philosopher
- Living Monstrosity
- Altering the Future
- Pull the Plug
- Spiritual Healing

Admittedly my opinion was formed because Spiritual Healing was the tape I got my hands on first from Death and listened to it over and over and over again before I listened to the rest of their stuff.

Here are the very very loose rules for this endeavor. You can put as many songs as you want in a post but no more than 5 per band. It would probably make my life easier for collating if we broke each band up into its own thread and makes for a more lively discussion on what makes the ultimate list so suggestions/updates can be moved around with upvotes (like if I posted the above list and someone said 'the song Leprosy should replace Spiritual Healing' and it got more upvotes than any other suggestion that would get swapped out). Doesn't even have to be 5 songs just one or 2 and a band are fine if a band doesn't have 5. Example: I couldn't name 5 Bloodbath songs off the top of my head but I'd put the song 'Eaten' on any list on the subject of death metal in a heartbeat.

To get this train rolling here are some of the bands mentioned in the previous post:

- Death (obviously)
- Obituary
- Morbid Angel
- Deicide
- Entombed (pre-Wolverine Blues mostly suggested)
- Cannibal Corpse
- Six Feet Under
- Carcass
- Suffocation
- Bloodbath
- Dying Fetus
- Cryptopsy
