How do people “gift” / buy music for others these days?
This used to be so simple. I’d like to “give the gift of music” for Christmas. I could make a mixtape, but nobody has tape players. Ditto burning a CD. I love that you can now print custom LPs on vinyl, but I’d also have to give them a record player and I’m not sure young people want that. (Still plan A.)
I guess I could copy MP3s to a thumbdrive, but at best it would be downloaded to a phone and tossed or wiped.
I suppose I’m reaching back to a time when there was a physicality to music, a heft and texture and weight. Something not completely ephemeral and weightless and empty. Liner notes even. Does that still exist?
Tangentially, I can’t help but note how many places still play 80s rock, as though it had never been surpassed or replaced. Well if it was good, if the bands and producers were incentivized to make it good (even gold or platinum), that’s partially because there was a lot of money in music. Not just tickets for performances, but buying the thing itself (in a bag).
I’d like to buy or mix music in a bag, but I’m no longer sure how. TIA.
