[CR Media] Lack of non-combat GM moves in Age of Umbra
Before I begin, I want to acknowledge 2 things:
- I understand that this campaign was designed to be deadly and unforgiving, both in setting and gameplay
- I recognize that just because I wouldn't enjoy the way one tables plays, that doesn't mean they are playing "wrong"
Having said that, I'm still confused why Matt isn't using virtually any non-combat GM moves on his spotlight whenever a battle map comes out. With 7 PCs and often only 1 or 2 powerful enemies, the action economy is completely out of whack. I'm halfway through episode 6 and here are some rolls the PCs made in this fight:
- Trying to climb a wall
- Trying to jump onto a cage
- Trying to free someone from said cage
Since none of these actions were successes with Hope, Matt takes the spotlight in between each one. And every time he has the spotlight he has an enemy attack, then spends enough Fear to have every other enemy attack. Due to the players' poor dice luck and multiple ongoing passive abilities, he has all the Fear he needs to have EVERY enemy attack after ONE PC tries to do anything. The group can't even retreat, because one PCs Agility roll to run away begins the cycle of enemy attacks all over again.
There are a huge list of non-damaging GM moves in Daggerheart that can change the environment, add tension, affect the players in other ways (like inflicting Stress) or basically do anything other than punish the players with damage for daring to roll dice. But we don't see any of those. Instead I'm watching 7 capable players get utterly obliterated by a system that allows one enemy to get near-infinite turns, and it's all RAW. If I hadn't already bought and read the system myself there's no way I'd want to play it after seeing this episode.
Are there other Daggerheart games (in CR or elsewhere) that show GMs using their spotlight differently, or is it all just attack, attack, attack?
Apologies if this was discussed to death when the show came out and I'm just behind the times. Also, I wasn't sure if this is better posted here or in r/daggerheart but I figured it more pertained to the CR show and not the campaign frame so I came here.
