Possible PICA? What do I do?
TLDR: My cat chews on any and all silicone/rubber/plastic and I’m at my wits end please help. Started with kitchen stuff and now it’s shoes. He doesn’t have any medical issues.
I’m in my 20s living in FL, USA and take my cat to the vet regularly. Nothing is medically wrong with him, he has toys, constant access to water, and a preprogrammed feeder that does 4 small meals a day. He also gets plenty of play time and snuggles daily. My cat, Carlos, is about a year and a half old now and is neutered. Since we brought him home (shelter found him on the street, said he was roughly 6-8 weeks old, he only spent one full day in the shelter) and he got big enough to jump on the counter (around 6 months old) it’s been a battle of him vs our cooking utensils. He will take food out of our hands if he can. He will jump on counters while we are cooking and try to get at things in the pan. We literally have to stand guard while cooking and we have to immediately clean it all before we can eat. If there’s any plastic/silicone utensils or storage containers, even clean ones in the drying rack, he will chew them to pieces. He ruined a set of silicone oven mits and a spoon rest. Of course I always try my best to clean up everything ASAP but this is exhausting. Tonight I came home from work and he chewed up a pair of flip flops (this is the first time it’s been anything outside of the kitchen) and I’m just so tired of it all. I can’t keep anything with any kind of plastic/silicone/rubber out. And I’m afraid he’ll move on to other things the more I put away.
Things we’ve tried: Cleaning up as we cook and before we eat (obviously) Putting him in a locked room while we cook/eat (he runs out as soon as he can and will still lick around the stove???) The pressurized air cans (didn’t work for the counter, if anything he liked it) Cat “block” spray (again, doesn’t work)
Per our vet he is in perfect health and “we just need to keep things put away” but I can’t even make a meal or leave my shoes by the door now. And I’m just scared it’s going to keep escalating. We’ve been lucky so far with no blockages but I’m afraid of that ending too. Please any advice is welcome because I love my boy, I am just so tired of him ruining my things.
