Why couldn’t I feel anger as a child/teen?
Hello, 22F. I’ve been trying to understand and research this but I can’t find someone with a similar story and don’t even know where to ask this. Up until I was around 14 I couldn’t feel anger at all. For reference I was bullied and I had awful controlling and coercive friends until 19 years old too. So even when these people mistreated me so bad for years I could never feel the emotion of anger. I knew what they were doing to me was wrong, but I could only feel sad.
I vividly remember thinking this multiple times: ”if my future s/o cheated on me, I would forgive him instantly. I can’t feel angry, what’s wrong with me?”. I especially remember doing this when my ”friend” bullied me and I ran off crying thinking that if I ever did this to her, she would be furious. But I didn’t feel an inkling of anger. Honestly I feel like crying just typing this, why couldn’t I feel angry? I couldn’t defend myself because I just lacked the ability to FEEL like someone did something wrong to me even though I KNEW they did.
These days I’m capable of feeling angry but it still usually just makes me cry. I forget so quickly, my emotions just evaporate. But at least I feel anger. Does anyone have any idea how this was/is possible?
