Tip: If you administer Sub Q fluids at home, you can use a heating pad and digital thermometer to warm the fluid safely and can use a hanging digital balance to administer the precise dose.

I’ve had to administer Sub Q fluids to two of my cats and sometimes the fluid would be too cold and cause them discomfort, and I found it difficult to administer the fluid and read the dose from the bag from where I was sitting simultaneously so what I ended up doing is wrapping a heating pad around the bag until the fluid was luke warm and then to administer it, I purchased a hanging digital balance scale from Amazon, hung that from the IV pole, hung the bag from the balance, inserted the line, primed it as usual, and then monitored the value on the balance while administering. 1ml of the fluid is about 1 gram so if the dose was 10mL, the weight on the balance should drop by 10 grams.
