Showdown at the Linghua Palace
Actually, it was more of a beatdown. After Dreamshard Immortal’s disciples recognized Xiao Yao and Da Li, Xiao Yao, Da Li, and Bing Zhu are led to the Linghua Palace to meet with the exalted lady of the island.
Why are they surprised at being recognized? They didn’t even bother to put on a disguise.
After hurtling sword energy (Bing Zhu, of course) and fireballs (Xiao Yao, who else) at mirrors hung around the hall, our fearless threesome finally get some face time with Dreamshard Immortal, who for some reason seems impressed for no reason:
”You managed to sneak into the Realm of Mist and Void. You have skills.”
Uh…you literally guided their ship here and let them onto the island. So what skills are we talking about here? Walking?
The Dreamshard Immortal then makes Pian Pian fight her other disciple whose name I still cannot remember. Pian Pian wins.
Hong Ye then shows up to fight Bing Zhu, but Xiao Yao steps in front of Bing Zhu before Hong Ye can put his fist through the overpowered demon slayer. Hong Ye ends up putting his fist through the stone floor instead. It would seem that the grass bracelet on Xiao Yao’s wrist has the ability to keep Hong Ye from going over the edge.
In the final bout, Pian PIan sends some kind of spiritual poison into Bing Zhu that binds him to the soul that lives in his saber. He will now feel everything his sister feels and suffer greatly, like he’s being burnt by ghost fire.
All that is to say, Hong Ye, Xiao Yao, and Bing Zhu are now all Dreamshard’s prisoner. But seriously, what did we expect to happen when a human, a fireball-wielding one trick pony, and a walking vegetable instigates a fight with a 1000-year-old immortal without a plan?
But Tang Songyun did get a chance to open her eyes really wide and showcase a series of exaggerated facial expressions during the entire ordeal…
Oh, and in a twist no one care about, Da Li pledges turns her back on her BFF and pledges her fealty to Dreamshard, while Xiao Yao is made to tend to a flower garden using the smallest ewer in xianxia land. The Dreamshard Immortal also promises to “consider” releasing Hong Ye if Xiao Yao undergoes the trials with all the other young ladies.
Can the yellow flower that always seem to have morning dew on it be Dreamshard’s true form?
Masterchef, Xianxia Style
To earn a place on Penglang, the girls are required to go through a series of trials. First up - a cooking competition.
And before you know it, all the pampered hothouse flowers are backstabbing each other, destroying ingredients so that they can have a leg up on their competition. Since Da Li manages to shout out “flower pastry” before Xiao Yao, Xiao Yao ends up having to select a different dish. Never fear, because her bracelet (“little leaf”) has a wisp of Hong Ye’s primordial spirit anttached to. It and is able to guide her through the steps of making shrimp and eel noodle.
It is too bad that all of her efforts came to naught when one of Dreamshard’s disciples set fire to her shrimp and eel stir fry, forcing her to improvise on the go and just make a bowl of plain noodles.
But once again, the 3rd law of FL halo comes to the rescue and Xiao Yao is able to ”impress” Dreamshard and pass the trial with Da Li and a handful of young ladies.
And why did Xiao Yao try to help Da Li with her dish? All it earned her is a tirade about how Da Li is tired of living under her shadow. I am sorry Da Li, but Xiao Yao is not responsible for your inferiority complex. But on the other hand, it serve Xiao Yao right for pulling that turn-the-other-cheek BS.
What about the women who didn’t pass the trial. Did they really become flowers in the garden?
Hong Ye and Bing Zhu’s Ordeal
In the meantime, Pian Pian has initiated psychological assault on our heroes in an effort to get them to agree to serve Dreamshard.
To Bing Zhu, she offers a tea that will ease his pain and also ease the pain of his sister. She tells him about how Dreamshard fell in love with a human and was betrayed by her lover. Now she needs the Yulin Spring to remain alive and break free of Penglan and that is why she deliberately sowed discord between the humans and the demons to lure Hong Ye to her.
Bing Zhu, however, won’t budge and offers to take her away from this place instead. It turns out that Pian Pian‘s brother Lu Tong was his friend, a fellow member of the Feiyu Guard. Pian Pian was abducted by a demon when she was young, and her brother joined the Feiyu Guard so he can rid the world of demons. Before Lu Tong died, he asked Bing Zhu to find his sister. Bing Zhu also tells her that even though he has seen greed and evil, he has also seen great kindness.
To Hong Ye, who has resisted the effects of the demon-devouring venom way longer than anyone expected, she tells him that the women who come to Penglang have come of their own free will and are driven by their greed and desire. To demonstrate her point, she let Hong Yi go to a ship full of women looking for Penglang. And when he asked what they would do if only one person can reach the promised land, the women showed no hesitation in getting their sword out and killing each other. So he grants them their wish and guides them to the Realm of Mist and Void.
The Courtyard of Summoned Mysteries
The cooking competition earned the embroidered pillows the right to stay on the island. To become Dreamshard’s disciple, they will need to complete a second trial - dispel the resentment of a vengeful spirit’s trapped in the Courtyard of Summoned Mysteries. The catch - once they enter the courtyard, the door will close. Only when the resentful has been dispelled or when everyone is dead will the door open again. If they cannot dispel the resentment before a candle burns out, they will remain with the spirit forever.
Once inside, the ladies faces a series of obstacles that require them to think on their feet and work together. All the ladies initially asked for Da Li’s help, which I guess really appealed to her vanity. But once the trial starts, it’s clear who’s really got the smarts and is the natural leader. I am glad that the writers didn’t give us a plotline where all the women banded together against Xiao Yao.
It was highly satisfying watching Xiao Yao stand up for the concubine’s daughter.
So there you have it.
