Is Striving for Greatness Worth It ?

Ask Thirties

Society celebrates greatness, but the cost is rarely discussed. Those who dedicate their lives to a single pursuit often sacrifice ordinary human experiences. Success brings wealth and recognition, yet life can become a luxurious cage with constant scrutiny, expectations, and little freedom to be imperfect or carefree.

Figures like Mike Tyson, Nikola Tesla, Virat Kohli and Michael Jackson show how greatness often comes with isolation. As stature grows, so does exploitation people seek access and advantage, leaving very few genuine, trustworthy relationships. Life narrows into a single pursuit, while curiosity, leisure, and connection fade.

What’s more, achievements don’t last forever. Few today remember Charles Babbage, Michael Faraday, James Watt, despite their foundational contributions. History moves on quickly.

Greatness demands focus; life demands balance. When everything is sacrificed at the altar of achievement, what remains is success without fullness. A holistic life, imperfect and unoptimized, may be less memorable to history but far more complete to the one living it.
