Some observant WikiTree members surprised by recent big changes in the CR (Content Rank) scores

As background, we've posted about the content rankings twice before on Room 2562:

 December 2024:  https://www.reddit.com/r/Room_2562/comments/1head3k/wikitree_preparing_profiles_to_please_google/

and

June 2025:  https://www.reddit.com/r/Room_2562/comments/1head3k/wikitree_preparing_profiles_to_please_google/

 Now, see https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1985265/points-have-jumped-significantly-past-performance-rating .

As noted in previous discussions, each WT profile has a content score (an absolute number based on various criteria including number of relatives, DNA test connections, categories, and biography subheadings) and a (relative) "rank" (one of ten equal-size groups, with "10" being the best).  According to various past discussions, this was set up in order to increase Google indexing of WT profiles (Search Engine Optimization, or SEO), which of course is hoped will lead to greater WT profits.

Past commenters wondered whether WT members would appreciate having their managed profiles downgraded in the new system as other profiles were improved.

A major assumption was that Google would not index profiles in the three lowest ranks.  But now (if I understand the discussion), it appears that Google actually had been indexing some of the rank 1-3 profiles.  In order to adjust for this reality, Aleš adjusted the score for "past performance," which apparently bumped around three million profiles up into higher ranks, with the result that many other profiles were pushed down into lower ranks.

I don't blame Aleš for the change, which seems to have been needed. But I do think that WT members would do well to concentrate on their own important genealogical work rather than let themselves be sucked into these stupid WT games.
