I'm leaving the bedside after only 6 months. What are my best options?
Long story short, I failed my new grad ICU orientation at 4 months and have worked on a medsurg floor for two months. It's too much. Having to be "on" for 12 hours a day, never getting a chance to breathe between caring for patients and charting, the overstimulation on the floor, being the middle man for every single person on the team, the time pressure – it's all too much for me. I was diagnosed with autism halfway through nursing school, and the social and sensory demands of nursing are a lot.
I'm applying elsewhere with my manager's support. The problem is that there aren't a lot of jobs that would want a nurse with six months of experience who failed both ICU and medsurg orientation. Most of the places I look at require at least 1-2 years of experience. I interviewed with an outpatient oncology infusion center that looks promising, a couple of primary care clinics, a work from home peer review job. I'm interested in case management or legal nursing but most of those jobs require experience.
I also applied to my local community college's medical lab technician program. I loved my microbiology course in nursing school so much I thought about changing majors at the time, and the idea of mostly solitary lab work appeals to me. I want to give nursing one last shot, but that's on the backburner. So is the idea of going back to school for social work, but I'd want to get case management experience first to see if I like that.
Does anyone who's left the bedside have advice? If you left the bedside with less than a year of experience or started your career somewhere other than a hospital, what are you doing now? I'd appreciate ideas, advice, reassurance, anything you can give me
