Really interesting detail regarding a certain Apprentice.
Somehow, after making an entire post analyzing Albina's character in detail and why she's my favorite apprentice, I have failed to notice the most important aspect.
She literally represents what Ryoshu could have become if she never had Araya.
Both of them were under the tutelage of Callisto, the Nursefather who is the most influential to them both, shown with Ryoshu's fascination with art and how Albina is almost turned into a copy of him.
Albina never had any friends in her entire life, so in the end, she became so lonely that only thing she could ever love is a mere object made from her own flesh, and descended into madness as a result, looking for friendship despite not understanding it.
Ryoshu, however, had Araya, the only red thread, the one true family member she cares for and wishes the best for. She's barely clinging on a thread, but that thread is what kept her from going insane.
Love is what made them took different paths.
Her mutilation of her own brain is literally an exact parallel and foreshadowing of how Ryoshu, after losing the one family she had, the one red thread she clings to, immediately mutilated her own mind too with the Arayashiki.
It's quite fitting that the Apprentice that act as a dark parallel to Ryoshu, and the Nursefather who influenced her the most, are the ones cut down by Sinclair, Ryoshu's best friend and most trusted translator.
But For a character that is so thematically resonant with the entire Canto while also being so intriguing, I really wished she could have gotten a bit more screentime and interaction with Ryoshu herself.
I've brought up before how some lines of SAIKAI can also fit each Apprentice and their Nursefathers in addition to Ryoshu herself, Rien and Araya, and fittingly, the lyrics that fits Albina the most are the ones that came right before Ryoshu's EGO attack.
"What do I know about love?
How can I recreate what I've never had?
All I know is that I must keep you thriving
If nutrients are what you lack
I will water you with every drop of blood I have"
Albina was already my favorite Apprentice to begin with and what I would consider a strong contender for the best written one, but this realization just pushed her into what is probably my single favorite PM side character of all time.
KJH, I kneel.
Goodnight, Albina. You were a magnificent one.
