Seasons
Watercolor tracks run across the horizon
Blue hues dance with orange tips
The geese steadily swim
And here I sit upon this rock
The one where we held hands
Naked trees stretch like webs
Crisp winds carry glitter across thin ice
The silence of snow smothers all life
A cloud of breath erupts from this rock
The one where I cried alone
Chlorophyll dazzles as it soaks in the sun
Yawning critters stretch stiff muscles
Red-winged blackbirds sing atop cattails
Power pulses from trembling limbs on this rock
The one where I reached for inner strength
The air looks harsh, as if over a grill
Invasive chestnuts engulf the suns reflections
The soil is dry, cicadas scream
Patience wanes, fists pound this rock
The one where I questioned my choices
Seasons emerge like paintings crafted by the same artist,
Different, yet similar, year after year
I come here to admire nature’s artwork and take comfort in its repetitions
But sometimes I wonder, here upon this rock,
Am I an observer, or part of it’s design?
