A Long Walk
He walks slowly forward, uncertainty with each step
A woman stands in his path, compassion in her eyes
She knows the fear he feels, she has seen it many times before
She reaches out her hand, a sign of a friend
He refuses, marching evermore
Years pass, the time etched on his face
Still he marches, though slower now
The fear has left his eyes, though uncertainty remains
The woman still joins him on his path, her compassion never wanes
He has seen others take her hand, watched them cross her peaceful bridge
He knows she is not the enemy, yet still refuses to take her hand
Years more pass, the time has marred his joints
He walks slower now, no longer a march
The woman walks with him, a faithful companion
He is ready now to take her hand, a wondrous journey awaits
He reaches, pauses to look around, and grasps her hand
He exhales, deeper than he ever has before
The world around him inhales softly
He's marching again, a smile with each step
The woman and man march hand in hand
Together they shall remain
