Starting from the beginning

So I have a betta already, I’ve had him for a little over a year now. When I started him out I had no idea what I was doing (did the whole 2.5 gallon tank thing) figured out what was better and got a 10 gallon but still used rocks and fake plants and the colorful decorations. Then figured out real plants were better, tried that and could never get water right, they kept dying (even the floaters that everyone warned me would take over the tank, dead) decided to get rid of all plants and went back to fake (silk) plants. Finally had the tank cycled after 7.5-8 months so he got moved to his bigger home! I’m wanting to set up a new tank for him, one that is properly set up from the beginning. So, please explain what I need to get, plants, how to care for plants. I want to give him the best home!!
