When Do You Need a Police Escort for Oversize Load HEIGHT? All 48 States [2026 Guide]

Height is the most dangerous dimension in oversize transport. A load that clips a bridge or power line does not get a second chance. Law enforcement escort for height is triggered at different thresholds than width — and the rules are less forgiving.

This is Part 2 of a 5-part series. Part 1 — Width Triggers Parts 3–5 covering length, weight, and combinations coming soon.

The Height Permit Ladder

HeightWhat Is Required
Up to 13'6"Legal in most states. No permit needed.
13'7" to 14'6"Oversize permit in most states. No escort yet.
14'7" to 15'Permit + route survey in many states. Pilot car in some.
Over 15'LE escort in North Carolina. Pilot cars elsewhere.
Over 15'6"LE escort in most Northeast states and OH, MI, IN.
Over 16'LE escort in most Southeast, South, Midwest, and Western states.
Over 17'LE escort in Virginia and Wyoming.
Over 18'LE escort in Texas and Oklahoma (route-dependent).

Note: Legal max height before a permit is required is 13'6" in most states. A few states allow 14'. Always check the specific state before assuming 13'6" is clear.

Quick Reference by Threshold

Over 15' → LE escort required: NC (1 state — lowest height trigger in the country for this region)

Over 15'6" → LE escort required: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, OH, MI, IN (14 states — Northeast plus Great Lakes)

Over 16' → LE escort required: WV, SC, GA, FL, TN, KY, AL, MS, AR, LA, IL, WI, MN, IA, MO, ND, SD, NE, KS, CO, UT, ID, NV, AZ, NM, OR, WA (27 states — the majority of the country)

Over 16'6" → LE escort required: CA (restricted corridors only)

Over 17' → LE escort required: VA, WY

Over 18' → LE escort required: TX, OK

No mandatory LE escort at any height: MT (notification only)

How Height Is Measured

Height is measured from the road surface to the highest point of the load, including anything attached.

  • Measurement is taken at the highest point — a peaked load, rigging, tie-down hardware, or antenna all count
  • Height changes along a route — a load that clears in flat terrain may not clear on a crowned road or a bridge approach
  • Road surface matters — some states measure from pavement, others from the ground. On banked roads this can change your effective height.
  • Load settling during transport can reduce height slightly — but never rely on this

Height vs. Width — Key Difference

Width triggers are relatively predictable. You know your load is 15' wide from the start and it stays 15' wide.

Height is dynamic. The same load can be:

  • Legal on a flat interstate
  • Restricted on a bridge with posted clearance under 16'
  • Prohibited through a tunnel
  • Requiring LE escort the moment you enter North Carolina from Virginia

This is why height poles on escort vehicles exist. The lead escort runs a height pole set to your load height so it contacts any obstacle before your load does.

The 4 Biggest Height Anomalies

North Carolina — Lowest height trigger in the region

NC requires LE escort at over 15' tall — a full foot lower than most surrounding states. South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia all trigger at 16' or higher. Loads that clear without LE escort for hundreds of miles can suddenly require a state trooper the moment they cross into North Carolina.

Virginia — Updated November 2024

Virginia revised its height LE escort trigger from over 16' to over 17' in November 2024. Any source, permit desk, or guide published before that date showing 16' is outdated. The current VDOT permit bulletin is the authoritative source.

This change actually makes Virginia more permissive than it was — a 16'6" load that previously required LE escort in Virginia no longer does under the new rule.

Wyoming — Stricter than neighbors

Wyoming triggers LE escort at over 17' — higher than the 16' threshold in Colorado, Utah, and Idaho but lower than the 18' threshold in Oklahoma. Wyoming sits in an unusual middle position. Operators routing through the Mountain West need to plan for a Wyoming-specific escort for loads between 16' and 17' that would be clear in surrounding states.

California — Corridor-specific, not statewide

California does not have a single flat height trigger. CHP escort requirements depend on:

  • The specific road (Interstate vs. state route vs. local)
  • Bridge clearance ratings along the route
  • Restricted corridors with posted maximums

A load that travels freely through Nevada at 16'4" may require CHP escort the moment it enters a restricted California corridor. Route surveys are more critical in California than almost any other state for tall loads.

Height and Bridges — The Real Risk

Even if your load does not hit the state LE escort threshold, bridges can restrict movement independently of the statewide height rule.

  • Bridges with posted clearances below your load height require a detour or special clearance regardless of state thresholds
  • Some states require bridge-specific engineering approval for loads over 15'6" even without LE escort
  • Your permit package should list every bridge along the route with clearances
  • The lead escort's height pole set to your load height is the physical safety check

A state saying "no LE escort required at 15'8"" does not mean you can drive under a 15'6" bridge. These are separate issues.

Route Surveys for Tall Loads

For loads approaching the LE escort height threshold, most carriers run a route survey first. This covers:

  1. Every overpass and bridge clearance along the planned route
  2. Traffic signal heights at intersections
  3. Overhead utility lines — power, communications, and cable
  4. Low-hanging tree canopies on secondary roads
  5. Any posted height restrictions along the corridor

Route surveys are legally required in some states for loads over certain heights. Even where not required they are standard practice because a surprise at 15'9" on a bridge rated 15'6" stops the entire move.

FAQ

What is the legal maximum height before I need a permit?

13'6" in most states. Some states allow 14'. Always verify for the specific state — do not assume 13'6" is universally legal.

My load is 15'8" tall. Do I need LE escort?

It depends entirely on the state. In NC you do (over 15'). In most NE states you do (over 15'6"). In most other states you do not until you exceed 16'. Check every state on your route individually.

What is a height pole and is it required?

A height pole is a telescoping vertical pole mounted on the lead escort vehicle, set to the height of your load. When the pole contacts an obstacle the driver stops before the load does. Height poles are required by law in many states for loads over certain heights and are standard practice on any sensitive tall move.

Does the height trigger apply independent of width?

Yes. A load can be only 10' wide but if it is 16'2" tall it triggers the height-based LE escort requirement in most states. Width and height are independent triggers. You only need to exceed one.

Virginia changed its rule. How do I know which states have recent changes?

Contact the state permit office directly for any state you are running through. Regulations change and online guides including this one may lag behind. The permit conditions on your issued permit are the authoritative source for that specific move.

What is the difference between a height restriction on a bridge and a state height trigger?

State height triggers determine when you need a permit and law enforcement escort. Bridge restrictions determine whether you can physically use a specific road at all. A load can be below the state LE escort height and still be physically unable to cross a specific bridge with low clearance. Both apply simultaneously.
