Potluck at Sex Offender's house
Hey everyone, this is a follow up to this post I had made about a guy with a history of sleeping with under 18 girls joining the parish.
This post is about a different man at this antiochian parish who's a lifetime registered sex offender in my state, he owns a large house in a very rural area that receives a house blessing every year. He has multiple prior sexual assault convictions as well as a 2024 arrest.
I had zero clue about his history until a friend told me a few months ago, the man is the groundskeeper at our church and is fairly trusted. The new converts who've joined in the past couple years don't know about his sex offender status, including the youth safety guy from what I could tell from his texts to me.
I've confronted the priest about this and he's responded that he's a changed man and that the situation with the sexual assault was a lot more complicated as it was his girlfriend he assaulted. He also told me that the sex offender laws are too strict and that I should never do anything stupid like expose myself, as well as reiterating that he feels offended that I would accuse him of being lax on sexual abuse and to focus on myself spiritually.
Partially taking from people's advice on here I haven't been back to the parish, but I still get emails about events taking place. During my original outburst I mentioned this man's sex offender status to an inquirer woman attempting to console/lecture me and my godfather told me I had no reason to let her know about that.
My priest claims that the police department in the county is well aware of the potluck, however I don't trust my priest after the comments he's made to me, as well as the fact that the youth safety guy thanked me for letting him know when I told him this man was a sex offender. For both this man and the man I posted about previously, my priest says he's not going to expose another person's confession and sins. This is despite the fact that he's told a friend of mine personal information about drama I was having with my parents without my consent. I asked him if he would take responsibility if anyone was hurt by these men and he said no.
The youth safety guy claimed that children were always within an adult's line of sight when this potluck happened and that he takes this very seriously. However over a year ago I've been to this man's property with a family of 3 daughters aged 8-14 before I ever knew that he was a sex offender, and their father is close friends with him and from what I can tell allows him unsupervised access to these girls.
Everyone outside of my parish (including Orthodox people) are horrified at the things I'm telling you all now, I've blocked my priest's number as he periodically texts me to "check in" and I've decided to go to the police as soon as possible.
I've tried to work with people in the church and do all the charitable things but all I get in response is shaming and downplaying of sexual abuse. My friends and godfamily have abandoned me for my stance on this but the safety of children and young women must always come first and this parish is actively putting them in danger.
