We have an 8 year old female cat who has feline herpes virus and has had flare ups a few times over the years but it has never been this bad. Below is a timeline of symptoms and things we have done. All pics were taken last night (saturday) around 7pm.

Tuesday - first noticed she wasn’t eating really or drinking. She had a couple treats but that was it. Begun to notice she was pacing in circles and getting stuck in corners. She was a bit lethargic. She would freeze up randomly when trying to lay down (picture #4).

Wednesday - Extreme lethargy. Still hasn’t ate or drank. Took her to the vet and ruled out fluid in the lungs. Electrolytes were low so she was given fluids and convenia. She continued doing laps around the room and somewhat getting stuck in corners.

Thursday - Woke up to her climbing up her cat tree. she meowed a couple times throughout the day and is normally very vocal. She ate a tiny bit of wet food but still no water or dry food. Became very lethargic around noon and went back to the vet. Received more fluids, an appetite stimulant. Also received potassium gluconate. Was very slow moving the rest of the night.

Friday - Woke up to again her climbing the cat tree. She made it up stairs on her own and slept in front of the front window on another cat tree. Continued giving bits of wet food with the potassium mixed in. She seems to more or less lick up the liquid from the food but not directly eat the food.

Saturday - crashed and looked almost as bad as the first day. Was extremely lethargic. barely moved / ate. Got worried and went back to a vet and was told she has a high white blood cell count. infection in the lungs and eyes and was prescribed different medication for that and eyedrops to give her. He wanted us to take her to a 24/7 monitoring clinic that was 2+ hours away for the night but we declined as it was over $2,000.

Since last night she has barely moved. Eyes shut and breathing has went from \~40 per minute to over 50 and right now back to 30sh. she seems very limp and hasn’t stopped sleeping since probably 2am. We are going to try and give her some food shortly. Not sure how many rush vet visits are necessary. We are in a small city in ontario canada and there are no weekend vets besides 1 that is 12pm-10pm. closest emergency vet otherwise is an hour out. Was told her blood pressure was fine by the vet last night. We also don’t want to further stress her by us being stressed and going to the vet every other day.

i have noticed throughout the week when “sleeping” her eyes were open which makes me wonder if she was ever sleeping.

Is the best bet to just let the medication / infection run its course and hope for the best?

i will try to add more as i think of it but thats it for now. Just curious if anyone has experienced this and how the outcome has been.

What is wrong with my cat?
