Well, a buddy of mine recently bought a new property to build his new business. He brought me in to set up his network and clear out leftovers from the IT closet. In there was this S3B3000 Datto, has a 2019 date stamp on it.

Obviously the data that was on it needed to be securely wiped first of all, but after looking into it, I also didn't want anything to do with the Datto software or subscription stuff. I may end up putting TrueNAS or something on here with some fresh drives. Speccy says these drives have seen over 5 years of constant use, so probably about at the end of their useful life for anything important. Ditto the 240gb SSD.

I spotted the VGA port, and after figuring that it had 32GB Ram and something of an oddball x86 Xeon CPU in it, wondered if I could install Windows. That succeeded. The "Aspeed" graphics adapter has "no dedicated memory" according to Windows after finding and installing the driver. But I spotted the internal PCIe slot and decided, ha, let's build the ultimate cursed gaming PC, at least for a test run. So, I grabbed a PCIe extender and mount, and an ATX jumper so I could start a dGPU with the required power. Put in a spare RTX 4000 I had on hand (more or less a single slot RTX 2080 roughly).

And, it actually works. It's not amazing by any means but I just installed Cyberpunk and it gets 60-80fps with DLSS with high textures and mostly ultra settings otherwise. It feels a bit like asking my blender to play Skyrim, but I thought it might being a chuckle to the rare few who ever wondered about gaming on a NAS, or enjoy absurdist humor.

This sub is awesome btw, invaluable info here.
