Hunger + Correction
Hunger
I watch the news in pieces
small enough to swallow
Red-eyed, white-skinned, blue-blooded,
shame dilutes over a population
if you exist within it
Epidemic,
rendering us into warm fuel
while numb thumbs
scroll over wounds,
fingers sliding over glass
like tongue on tooth
expecting
an ordinary amount of violence
In America we pledge our stomachs.
I am no exception.
stuck in the throat:
You are all worse than each other
Correction
Eight, maybe nine.
Throwing a dull, rusted machete
at a plank of wood
propped against a rock.
A bad throw. It ricochets.
Hits him in the mouth.
Crack.
He drops to his knees
and grabs at the mess
of blood and broken teeth
in the grass
hands full of what should be inside him,
simply trying to put it back.
Working on a collection for fun/friends. Here are a few more! The 2nd poem is based on an early childhood experience.
