The founder of the official Anki is planning to retire soon so Ankihub (Anking) is planned to take over management and become the official Anki in the future.
- Official announcement from Anki -> AnkiForums: Anki’s Growing Up
- Additional explanation by Anking -> Reddit: Addressing your concerns about Anki and AnkiHub
For now they plan to operate in the same way as the current Anki so there are no plans to change prices or the open source license. Ankihub is a group for medical students with many developers so this merger could increase development resources and potentially speed up Anki’s development or improve its usability. (e.g. now that they have some spare development resources, they are reviewing Anki's launcher) However they are likely still busy with the merger process at the moment.
I think one of the biggest changes for developers is that this has opened up the possibility of working on Anki’s development as part of the official team, they have already hired some of Anki’s key contributors. (they also donate to AnkiDroid volunteers and FSRS volunteers) Anki and Ankihub are growing in user base so it looks like they’ll continue to expand in the future so interested developers might want to reach out to them. (But I'm not related to them so I don't know if they're recruiting or not.)
[ Q. What are Anki, Anking, Ankihub, and add-ons? ]
- Anki (program) Free and open source flash card software. 2500+ extensions available for free. Latest Spaced Repetition algorithms are currently the most accurate in the world (FSRS) Mobile versions: AnkiDroid(Android, develop by volunteers) & AnkiMobile (iOS, develop by official Anki).
- Anking (Organization) The medical group familiar with Anki and the mod of medicalSchoolAnki subreddit. Numerous tutorial videos and add-ons are available.
- Anking (Deck) This is the shared high quality decks of Anki for medical use, maintained by Anking. (Anking has taken over development from volunteers).V11 is available for free.
- Ankihub (add-on) This is the project managed by Anking. You can get the latest Anking deck V12 and sync in real time, needs a subscription ($5/month) but AnkiHub has a free scholarship so actually anyone can use it for free if they apply (e.g. $5 is a lot of money in some countries). Most applicants are accepted for this scholarship if they apply: AnkiHub: Scholarships. If you encounter problems you can contact AnkiHub community.
- Ankihub (Organization) The group managing AnkiHub is likely almost identical to Anking. They actively organize activities for medical students who use Anki and volunteer and invest in the Anki development community every year. Recently they seem to be expanding their scale and hiring employees and developers.
- Add-ons (Tools): Add-ons are extensions for Anki developed by individual volunteers or third parties. They can be used with Anki for desktop. Since each has a different author, there is almost no support from official Anki or the community. There is a manual available for developing add-ons.
