Slowburn
i saw it coming
like smoke before the fire,
thin, almost nothing,
easy to ignore
you disappeared in pieces
a day here
a week there
returning with soft apologies
like they could glue time back together
i learned your silence
better than your voice
i waited
like it meant something
like patience could turn absence
into love
you said it was who you are
that distance is how you care
and i tried to believe
that being left on read
was a form of affection
but love shouldn’t feel
like guessing
or checking a screen
for proof i still exist
i kept shrinking
to fit into your absence
calling it understanding
calling it enough
it wasn’t
this isn’t a fire
it’s a slowburn
that never warms
only consumes
and i think
i’ve been burning alone
