Into the Agnewverse - A chart I made for a 1976 mockup sequel to TTNW where Agnew beat RFK in a landslide even after his corrupt deals were exposed (based on my TTNW Agnew guide).
First time ever using Draw.io. I hope it looks good.
I made this guide on how to win as Agnew in TTNW with over 500 EVs even with RFK controlling the FBI and using it against you to reveal Agnew's kickback schemes back in his Maryland days. Sadly, given my full time job, lack of background in coding, and crippling writer's block, it is highly unlikely I would make this a mod any time soon. I wanted to explore what an Agnew CYOA sim set after this victory against RFK would look like. As a unique angle, Agnew's strategy would be courting various faction leaders in the GOP. Dole is always the VP option, but the favored faction would change the Democratic opponent faced for the 1976 Presidential election. I also included two unique paths that can be triggered and override the faction infighting. Here are the five paths:
-
Silent Majority Path: Led by the recently party switching and recently elected Mayor of Philadelphia Frank Rizzo, the Silent Majority types are concerned with law and order, reaction to liberalizing attitudes on social issues, and retribution against the ousted RFK. To appease this faction, President Agnew has to clamp down hard on crime and societal disorder (using RFK's RICO successfully to clamp down on the mafia, stopping forced busing, and passing a 1994 Clinton style crime bill would be chief achievements to satisfy this faction). Broadly, a socially conservative, reactionary Agnew Presidency that is not fiscally conservative enough to activate the Reagan branch of the fiscal conservative path would achieve satisfaction with this wing. If Agnew secures this faction as triumphant, then he faces recent party switcher NYC Mayor John Lindsay. Lindsay campaigns on defending civil rights progress, social liberalism, and a pro-civil liberties platform and chooses the progressive Senator George McGovern as his VP option. If Agnew wins reelection and Dole wins the 1980 Presidential election in the ending slide under this path, then Dole chooses Alexander Haig as his VP. (I consider this path the canon path myself.)
-
Rockefeller/Establishment Path: Led by the newly appointed Treasury Secretary Nelson Rockefeller, the Rockefeller wing wants the opposite of the Silent Majority types. This faction wants President Agnew to push for civil rights and civil liberties expansions, continued progress on desegregation and busing, and a reversal of the right wing trend of the Republican Party. Chief achievements satisfying this faction include appointing liberal SCOTUS justices over conservative ones for vacancies, maintaining federal enforcement of integration and busing, and setting the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in motion. Should Agnew ally with this wing of the party, the South and working class whites will feel betrayed by Agnew's liberal pivot and rejoin the Democrats. Since John Rarick was the AIP candidate in 1972, and also since George Wallace avoided being shot by Arthur Bremer in this timeline, Alabama Governor George Wallace secures the nomination for the Democrats under this path, with Wallace choosing West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd as his VP nominee. Liberal backlash is so substantial, however, that George McGovern runs third party against Wallace and Agnew, with Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm as his running mate. Should Agnew win against Wallace and then Dole win in 1980 with this path, Dole chooses Pennsylvania Senator Richard Schweiker as his VP.
-
Fiscal Conservative Path: This one has two leaders, who have veered apart from each other over social issues despite their firmly free market views on the economy. Cutting taxes, economic deregulation, and free trade are the desired policies for this faction. President Agnew needs to achieve a 1980's Reagan-esque tax cut, push for deregulation of the economy, pass a free trade agreement, and shoot down healthcare and welfare expansions. If Agnew satisfies the fiscal conservatives but is socially conservative enough without activating the Silent Majority path, then California Governor Ronald Reagan serves as faction leader (despite his prior actions as Governor). If Agnew is more socially liberal without activating the Rockefeller path instead, then noted libertarian and Arizona Senator Barry M. Goldwater Sr. serves as faction leader. With the dismantling of the New Deal orthodoxy and welfare state set by prior Democratic administrations done by Agnew should be pursue this path, economically progressive Democrats dominate the party's field in backlash. Maine Senator Edmund Muskie wins the nomination if the Reagan subroute is chosen and Idaho Senator Frank Church wins the nomination if the Goldwater subroute is chosen, given their respectively more liberal and more conservative social views compared to each other. Both men choose Indiana Senator Birch Bayh as VP nominee. If Agnew wins with this path, and should Dole win the 1980 election, then Dole chooses future California Governor Ed Reinecke in the Reagan subroute and chooses California Senator Barry M. Goldwater Jr. in the Goldwater subroute.
-
Max Dove Variable Path: After the fall of Saigon in October 1972, the American public does not crave war for the time being. That being said, craven concessions conducted by the Agnew administration abroad will certainly wound the confidence of the American public likewise. In other words, Agnew needs to remain cautious but firm with public policy. Should the maximum dove score be achieved, a special route opens. Hawk backlash propels Washington Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson to the Democratic nomination, with California Senator and "world government" advocate Alan Cranston as VP nominee. Unlike the other paths, faction leaders within the GOP stop mattering as much and instead, Agnew has to prove during the election that he has not capitulated to Soviet and Chinese threats as an overcorrection. President Agnew winning reelection in this path should Dole win the 1980 election in this path's ending would have Dole select former Minnesota Congressman pete McCloskey as his VP nominee.
-
"Get Lester'd" Path: In this timeline, Governor Agnew sacrificed his friend and fellow kickback lover Lester to the authorities when the RFK infiltrated FBI leaked Agnew's dirty laundry to the public. While President, Agnew has to clear his name during independent counsel investigation, counter-infiltrate the FBI and Justice Department with his own loyal supporters, and vindicate himself to the public, which would be tracked by a "Lester" variable. If Agnew fails to achieve the proper variable threshold, then his corrupt dealings back in Maryland cannot be swept under the rug. Indictments move forward, the press hounds the administration, and public faith gets lost. Under Watergate-like pressure, Agnew resigns the Presidency and hands control to Vice President Robert Dole. Whichever faction was satisfied enough to trigger their route otherwise gets approached to have their faction leader get sworn in as Vice President and run with Dole for 1976. Should the wrong faction be chosen, or if no faction leader is sufficiently satisfied, then Texas Senator George H.W. Bush is chosen hurriedly. This path would be the most difficult, as Dole faces former Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who is on a quest to return honor and dignity to the Kennedy family name. Kennedy chooses former Treasury Secretary and failed California Gubernatorial candidate Jesse Unruh for VP nominee, since Unruh left RFK's administration before the fall of Saigon and thus avoids most of the taint plaguing those who remained with RFK's Cabinet. This path would be the most difficult for the player, but victory would be possible. The Presidential list as part of the ending could see Dole reelected in 1980 or lose.
So, I know this was detailed for a mockup, but I just wanted to do something productive after work to destress. I am curious what everyone here thinks. If I ever gained the time and skills, I would definitely love to see this mockup turn real.
