Why can I erase grey pencil lead but not coloured?

"Grey" Pencil is Graphite (carbon)

Colored pencils are tinted wax based material

Carbon can be scrubbed off paper easier than wax

Colored pencils aren't made from graphite, they're typically wax-based. I assume it's the same reason you can't easily erase crayon.
