Kerry Courts Corporate Developers

All this talk about affordable housing and yet the projects nearest city hall are out-of-state corporate developers with a proven history of rent-gouging who bought out of the affordability requirement and will knock down an acre of woods for their cheap body boxes.

"As the company is making a payment to obtain affordability incentives — rather than making some units available at affordable rates — the apartments will be market-rate, meaning they will be rented at whatever prices the market will bear."

"For one, Holbrow said the site had about 1.1 acres of woods that normally would be subject to preservation but which the company plans to remove to allow for construction. To make up for that loss of tree canopy, the company has proposed planting 97 trees in public parks."

"Greystar and 25 other property management companies “agreed to collectively pay more than $141 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing landlords of driving up housing costs by using rent-setting algorithms offered by the software company RealPage.” The news agency said Greystar agreed to pay $50 million under the proposed settlement.

And the Federal Trade Commission said in December that Greystar agreed to pay $24 million and to stop deceptive business practices to resolve charges that the company misled consumers about monthly rent costs by tacking on hidden fees on top of advertised prices.

“Greystar misled consumers by advertising low rent prices and then adding mandatory fees at the end of the sales process,” Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a news release."
