Is one yeast infection a year for 4 years considered normal or recurrent?
TLDR: If I’ve only had one yeast infection a year and it clears up with OTC topical clotrimazole, do I really need to take strong prescription oral antifungal like itraconazole?
So since 2022 I’ve had 4 yeast infections total. The first was due to a UTI antibiotics treatment. One year later same thing, UTI treatment followed by YI. Third was random, it just showed up. And fourth (current one) is after a trek, probably due to sweat/stress.
So far, just a 6 day Clotrimazole gel application clears the infection up for more than a whole year. But I went to my gyno recently and she prescribed me itraconazole. Looking it up it’s a strong anti-fungal for really persistent infections which I feel I don’t have! So I don’t feel like I need it, yet anyway, and afraid of creating more resistant yeast or more imbalance in my natural flora.
What have others experiences been? Should I start the strong medication or wait and see if situation gets worse to use stronger options?
