[990] Sleepy Story

This one made it to the finals in the contest I wrote it for, but ultimately lost. It has since then been shortlisted twice, so I'm hopeful it has a life outside that contest?

My main concern is that the magic ring feels out of nowhere and unexplained and readers won't like that. I've considered changing it to a drug, but then I worry that readers might think I'm confused about how stimulants work and it's supposed to be realistic, when what I'm going for is a more fantastical effect that is hopefully taken at face value.
