Out of The Blue...7 days and Counting. Impact on Hernia?
82 yo Male. Other than a few days after previous surgeries I've never had any concerning Constipation issues.
Had a very productive BM last Saturday (7 days ago).Have been regular for years (BM every 1-3 days).
I don't drink much water, eat a lot of less than optimal foods (sufficient fiber each day, but heavy on desserts, sweets) but my diet has previously not caused any issues. I started to be(come) concerned after 4 days of not going with minimal if any urge to do so.Even 4 days is unusual. .
On Day 4, tried a "gentle" OTC Laxative (MiraFast Soft Chews) feeling certain it would quickly solve the problem having taken no Laxatives for decades. Kept to minimum dosage per directions.Nothing.Reached out to Doctor's office (more on the Doctor later) simply to ask for their Laxative recommendations. Purchased Senna Plus on Day 5. Again started with minimum dosage. Nothing.
Here's my "unusual" complication. I've had an inguinal hernia (lower left abdomen) for weeks. Consulted a Surgeon before the Constipation started. Surgery is definitely anticipated. Via the Portal for the Surgeon I've made repeatedly made them aware of the constipation issues AND that the hernia area has gone from mostly uncomfortable to increasingly outright pain. The few times I've tried to have a BM even moderate straining--no production-- makes the hernia area worse painwise (and possibly bulge-wise).
Not sure the Portal method even reaches the treating physician for his feedback. My appetite disappeared on Day 6 and here on Day 7 has not retuned at all. I can move around normally but when the pain spikes it forces me to get to the only semi-comfortable position I have (lying on my back) quickly. I'm clueless with anatomy but as the unpassed food builds up my fear is that it will complicate the surgery, or change a routine hernia repair into something far more ominous. To say nothing of common post-op Constipation
Meeting with Surgeon again in 3 days. Anyone remotely have this potential, serious impact between unprecedented Constipation (with no resolution in sight) and abdominal surgery? Sorry for the length of this post.
