Looking for lawyer in unknown state to help release funds to non resident widow named on account - where to start
Hi all,
I'd like to keep this as simple and factual as possible but would appreciate any clues as to where to start. Please let me know if there is pertinent information I'm missing. I'm looking for information on:
- How to recover a SSN or ITIN for a non resident
- How to find the right type of lawyer (or even what type of lawyer and where in the country)
- Any other concerns you think we should try and address at this point
My dad died last month. He was a UK resident although had an SSN or ITIN from working in America a handful of times. When my mum and dad were younger they bought a property in Florid. Mum is also a UK resident and may have had an ITIN or SSN based on the fact they had a joint US bank account. My mum and dad are each other's only spouse, never divorced.
They sold the property a while before my dad died. She would like to gain access to the money that went into the US account. The sale was, I believe, over ten years ago and it's my understanding that the money sat in a US account ever since.
My mum can find no record of her ITIN or SSN. She does have the account details of the bank account and has never utilised online banking or anything of the sort. She has tried to contact the bank, but it has led to the account being locked and their support team suggesting she contact a lawyer (which we assume is standard procedure, we are not seeking any action here)
What kind of lawyer should we look for, which state should we look for the lawyer in, how can we retrieve her tax number, and is there anything specific to the US that we may be missing any need to look into?
Thanks for your time
