A dish called Gist (pronounced with a hard g) that was a variation of wonton soup but ordering it meant that all the rules for social customs were inverted
I dreamed I was a young girl, somewhere in an Asian country (China, Korea, Japan, idk) and an older wealthy couple adopted me and they were teaching me the social customs around ordering food and eating it at restaurants and social gatherings. It seemed like they were training me to be an eating companion for rich people.
There were things like what topics were acceptable in polite conversation, how to give and respond to a compliment, that you should wait to order until people of higher social status had ordered and then just order whatever they ordered.
But there was a dish called 'gist' that was basically wonton soup except it was served on a giant wooden arena where an assortment of dumplings (steamed, fried, potstickers) were arranged in the bleachers of the arena and the bowls of broth were placed at each end of the playing field where the goals would go in a football game.
When someone ordered gist, you didn't use chopsticks or spoons anymore. A waiter came out and painted clown makeup on everyone before they glued a pokemon mask on everyone's face. You would use your hands to grab one of the dumplings in the bleachers, hold it high, say something insulting to roast someone at the table, and then SLAM the dumpling down into the bowl of broth so that everyone got splashed before you shoved the dumpling in your mouth which you were supposed to chew loudly and let pieces fall out of your mouth all over the table.
At first it was just a novelty dish served at fancy restaurants, but then gist parlors started opening up where that was the only item on the menu, and it got competitive to see who could wear the most ridiculous costume and who could be the rudest, most obnoxious eater in the whole restaurant.
