What makes a good depiction of psychology?

I think there are two dimensions:

1. 'What' : What aspects of human psychology the writing is capturing

2. 'How' : How the writing expresses such psychology in a way that is felt strongly to the readers

But I can't grasp the secret ingredients behind a good 'What' and a good 'How'.
