Simple, well-coded (& well-commented) projects on github for learning & understanding php best practices?

Hey webdev, first time posting and just a quick shoutout that this sub is an awesome source of motivation for getting into web development! I love the advice you guys give to all of us newbies trying to break into the field.

I was hoping you guys could recommend some projects on github for me that I can go through in my spare time to digest and get good exposure on PHP best practices. I've found a few good ones, but most are so large and complex that I get a bit overwhelmed at times. I'm just starting to grasp the idea of MVC frameworks but still going through tutorials as I move forward. If you know any small projects that are well-coded and commented, I'd greatly appreciate a link!

There is not a lot out there that is well-coded and simple. A lot of frameworks are well-coded, but not that simple. A site I would certainly recommend is http://www.phptherightway.com/. It is a hub to resources showing current standards (although personal preferences make it so things like this can never be accepted universally).

One thing you can do right now is to install a plugin in your editor or IDE that will complain when you do not follow standards, for example PHP CodeSniffer plugin for Sublime Text 2: https://github.com/benmatselby/sublime-phpcs. By keeping the sniffer happy, you will remain happy.
