Avian coming of age ritual: Adsurgere

Lore

When Avians (Race of Humanoid Bird People) reach a certain age there is a ritual preformed called Adsurgere. Specifics about the ritual as well as the age it's done vary from Tribe to Tribe but the one thing that remains is it's purpose. Teaching the young to fly. Again specifics vary but the things that remain consistent are

Preparation: Throughout their lives they are told about Adsurgeres, they see friends and relatives go through it and hear about having their own one day. They often get trained to fly usually by a family member or teacher.

The Adsurgere: On a young Avian's Adsurgere the exact ritual varies widely. Some treat it like a special birthday party others treating in a much mire serious way but the end result is the same. The Child either jumps or is pushed off a ledge and has to fly. Again the specifics of it vary massively from tribe to tribe but that's pretty much what happens.

The Goal: It's supposed to be an Avian's first flight. These days safety is cared about a lot more so there are almost always more than enough adults to catch them if they fail. So it's usually not life threatening.

Different cultures: As mentioned there are thousands of different Avian Tribes that view and treat this tradition differently.

Examples:

Age: Some Tribes have their done as 10 or 11 years which is usually when they start learning to fly but it's far more common to be between 13 to 18 for most other Tribes.

How it's viewd: Some Tribes treat it like a serious test while others treat it like a sweet 16 or an 18th birthday in our world.

Failing: Some treat punish or even outcast children who fail while others treat failing more like a mildly embarrassing thing.

Death: For the most party dying during your Adsurgere these days is very rare and seen as a tragedy. While some isolated tribes far outside of the United Tribes still allow this, for most of the world it hasn't been the case for centuires.

These days most have a way more relaxed view of Adsurgere. Seeing it a major milestone than a test. This is mostly in the United Tribes (the defacto government of the Avians) who have gradually introduced a far more relaxed view on Adsurgere for centuries now.

If flying is already known: This is actually not uncommon at all, especially in Tribes that do Adsurgeres at a later age it's very common for teenage Avians to have flown before their Adsurgere.

Roots: In the ancient times before Avian society advanced to what it is now, young Avians were often thrown with no supports or other way of surviving aside from flight. As time went on the more ruthless parts were abandoned by the more civilised parts of the world but some more primitive tribes still do it.

Sidenote: Adsurgere means "to rise" in Latin, that was intentional. I often use Latin words while worldbuilding names.

Tl;Dr: They throw children off a ledge to see if they fly, much like birds irl.
