Is my whippet unhappy or just adjusting?
We got our whippet Croia back in early March. She’s a 1YR old female intact and she will follow us room to room and lay near us but if we pet her too much or speak to her too much, she’ll stand up and walk away and pace. I also noticed she licks her lips, not a lot but enough for me to notice.
One thing we know she loves is our 8 month old Italian greyhound puppy - she loves to play and run with him and is very protective over him during walks.
I’ve never owned a whippet before - with most of my animals, I’m gentle with them and they just learn to love me but I can’t read this girl. She is totally calm and collected like a whippet and does zoomies outside and barks and growls when she plays and she’s incredibly well behaved. If she’s doing something she’s not supposed to, you just have to tell her once and she stops - she’s the definition of a good girl.
what can we do to help her settle in more? she’s crate trained and prefers to sleep in her crate at night and we do put a little blanket over her if she sleeps with us on the couch or lays with us in bed. Its also strange that she doesnt necessarily want to lay on our bed with us while we’re in it - she will if we stand up and go to the washroom etc - it seems to me that maybe she thinks she’s not supposed to be on the bed? our Iggy sleeps in our bed and loves to be a little lazy potato.
She was originally with her breeder until 1YO because someone reserved her at 6mo and never picked her up (they were from out of province and paid the breeder boarding costs to keep her) the breeder got sick of their excuses and refunded them as the dog obviously wasnt their priority.
Our breeder is very experienced and all of her dogs are amazingly trained but she seems strict so I’m wondering if some of these habits came from rules that were enforced in her home.
