EPISODE 7

An impostor posing as Bai Yutang made fun of the stranded Zhan Zhao and Ding Zhaohui at a dangerous pit on Xiankong Island. He prepared to set off fire mines beneath them, taunting the "Imperial Cat" for falling into a straightforward trap. But before long, the genuine Bai Yutang was squatting at the edge of the pit. He made fun of Zhan Zhao's situation while giving him the secret to surviving by telling him to pull a particular fuse to turn off the mines. Zhan Zhao successfully handled the threat by following his gut and following the recommendations. The impostor turned out to be Zhi Hua, who had entered the island days before, according to the real Bai Yutang. Lu Fang and Han Zhang, the island's leaders, were poisoned by Zhi Hua with a chemical that caused hallucinations and insanity. In order to murder the locals, he had also brought assassins from the Tang Sect who were posing as domestic help.

Zhi Hua ordered Bai Yutang to assassinate Zhan Zhao in return for the medication, using the antidote for the poisoned brothers as leverage. Bai Yutang and Jiang Ping tricked the villain by pretending to engage in a heated combat with Zhan Zhao. They successfully captured Zhi Hua and obtained the antidote by coordinating their operations to take him by surprise during the manufactured commotion.

Lu Fang expressed regret for the hardship his younger brother had created after the poison had been neutralized and he had recovered consciousness. Zhan Zhao assured Lord Bao that if the official seal was returned, he would speak on Bai Yutang's behalf and clarified that the "Imperial Cat" title was only a royal joke. Zhi Hua was personally questioned by Bai Yutang, but the prisoner persisted in his defiance, saying his master had no fear of the Emperor.

Instead of being coerced into enticing Zhan Zhao into a trap, Bai Yutang had chosen to confront the threat on his own. Inspired by their developing friendship, Bai Yutang consented to travel with Zhan Zhao to the capital to confront Lord Bao. He acknowledged that the main motivation for his "theft" of the official seal was to provoke Zhan Zhao into a combat. The group left with the prisoner early the next morning.

Ming Zhu'er was shocked to learn that the legendary "Jinmao Rat" was actually afraid of water while traveling. They decided to use a land route because Bai Yutang was clearly uncomfortable aboard the boat.

Bai Yutang attempted to persuade Zhan Zhao to serve as a go-between for him and Huo Linglong when he was relaxing in the woods.

He admitted "borrowing" a pharmaceutical recipe from her in order to study, and he wanted Zhan Zhao to make things right. However, Zhan Zhao firmly refused to assist him in getting out of that specific situation. The tension increased as they approached the capital. Zhan Zhao heard kids reciting a mysterious song about a brother's passing and a throne that was altered by the sound of an axe, which was obviously a reference to the speculations about the imperial succession.

He urged the group to move quickly, fearing a political storm. In the meantime, Prince Hui (Zhao Zhuoqing) was having passionate fancies about Huo Linglong. But Huo Linglong's primary concern was Zhan Zhao's security. The Prince told her that a warrant had been issued for the guard's arrest and that the rumors in the capital were connected to the letter Zhan Zhao was carrying. Huo Linglong hurried outside to stop Zhan Zhao out of distress.

Cheng Hao of the Dali Court had previously set up a trap with a sizable army of soldiers at the city gates, where she was able to locate him. When Bai Yutang and the others attempted to stop Cheng Hao from taking Zhan Zhao into custody, the situation almost descended into violence.

Zhan Zhao was brought away in heavy stocks while Prince Hui, who claimed to be there to welcome his "friend" Bai Yutang and take him back to his house to discuss a strategy, arrived just in time to calm the situation. Zhan Zhao was taken before the court so that he might be questioned. The full essence of his mission was revealed as he stood straight in spite of the chains.

A series of letters between Western Xia and the Song Empire, written by someone claiming to be a descendent of a close servant of the late Emperor Taizu, served as the evidence he carried. By claiming that Emperor Taizong had stolen the throne rather than ascending through the "Covenant in the Golden Chamber," these writings explicitly contested the legitimacy of the present imperial line. Zhan Zhao affirmed that he was fully aware of the sender's claim to have indisputable evidence of this royal treason.

EPISODE 8

Chief Justice Cheng Hao questioned Zhan Zhao about the dangerous secret letter he had been transporting inside the Dali Court. Zhan Zhao affirmed the letter's claim that Emperor Taizong took over the throne from Emperor Taizu rather than inheriting it through the legal "Pact of the Golden Slender." Cheng Hao framed Zhan Zhao as the source by pointing out that Zhan Zhao had visited a friend while traveling, suggesting that the timing coincided perfectly with the spread of destabilizing rumors.

Cheng Hao rejected Zhan Zhao's argument that the letter's recipient had a much stronger reason to disseminate the allegations, pointing out that the court had merely identified a deceased middleman. When a border market official's body was presented in court, the investigation deepened. In a report from the Yicheng magistrate, Cheng Hao claimed that Zhan Zhao had stolen proof of traitorous conspiracy with Western Xia, broken into the local court, and killed the official as well as a policeman called Liu Hong Yi. Zhan Zhao acknowledged his presence at the scene but maintained his innocence, explaining that Liu Hong Yi was the one who found out about the official's disloyalty and was killed to keep him silent.

Zhan Zhao had no witnesses after Liu Hong Yi was killed, therefore Cheng Hao identified him as the murderer based on the evidence of local guards who reported seeing a "man in white". Zhan Zhao became aware that Cheng Hao was fabricating information in order to exact revenge. Many of the Dali Court's unsuccessful cases had been retried and overturned by Lord Bao in recent years, which prompted Zhan Zhao to condemn Cheng Hao as a corrupt official more concerned with political scheming than justice. Cheng Hao was furious and gave the order to torture Zhan Zhao. Even though he had secretly added nails to the torture sticks, Zhan Zhao persisted in his resistance despite the pain. Before being taken to the execution cells, he finally grabbed one of the spiky sticks and threw it so hard that it broke the "Impartial and Incorruptible" sign above the seat. Huo Linglong, Bai Yutang, and Zhao Zhuo Qing gathered at the Prince's residence in the meantime.

They sent the "Five Venoms" of the Xiuluo Cult to the prison in order to kill Zhan Zhao. Si Ming pointed out that if Zhan Zhao's friends tried to save him, it would be evidence of his cooperation with the underworld and warrant his execution right away. Huo Linglong was the first to enter the prison secretly but the Five Venoms soon surrounded her.

In order to ask the Emperor for an imperial gold token, Bai Yutang and Zhao Zhuo Qing simultaneously took a huge risk by breaking into the Imperial Palace at night. Zhan Zhao fought alongside Linglong against the assassins after breaking free from his chains inside the prison. Cheng Hao and a group of armed guards confronted them as they struggled to escape the prisons. But at the crucial moment, Bai Yutang showed up with the imperial token in hand.

Cheng Hao was forced to give up after realizing the Emperor's power. Huo Linglong eventually discovered that "Brother Ding" was actually the well-known Bai Yutang when the group sought refuge from the rain at a wayside tea stall. Arriving to express a message from the Emperor, Zhao Zhuo Qing explained that political pressure from Lord Bao's enemies was the cause of the trial at Dali Court.

The Emperor sensed that a high-ranking official was secretly providing Western Xia with information, but he never questioned Zhan Zhao's loyalty. Zhan Zhao came to the conclusion that the Lord of Xiangyang was the only one who could control both the government and the underworld after combining this with Zhong Xiong, the Flying Trident Guardian. Shao Jizu praised the Lord of Xiangyang for the gift of a magnificent sword in his own residence.

Bai Yutang complained about Lord Bao's "cunning" behavior while Zhan Zhao was getting ready to return to Xiangzhou. He realized the judge had cleverly tricked him into putting his life in danger for the rescue. After laughing with his friends, Zhan Zhao gave Huo Linglong back a set of Linglong Honey.

Emperor Zhao Zhen was back in the palace, staring at a tiny mouse that Bai Yutang had carved into a wooden pillar during his brazen break-in, while the three went out on their new mission. The Emperor was impressed by the rogue's boldness and, instead of getting upset, ordered the carving to be kept.
