Last time, Miguel pushed Savannah down an elevator shaft, seemingly killing her.

*************

We never expected it. At least, not this soon. The massive ship came over the horizon one day, growing closer until it landed on the island. It had come to take us off the island.

When the Wardens met us, we assumed that we had won The Game. Mike and I assumed we were the last group to survive. But that was far from the truth, and we realized it when they brought us on board.

Men and amazons alike were hemmed in and it didn’t take the Wardens long to lock us in cells. It was odd, being near so many amazons without needing to be afraid of them. Some were large and others were surprisingly small. I recognized none of them. The journey was long and disorienting. Mike and I shared the same cells and we asked for answers from anyone who walked by. All anyone told us was that the ship would take us back to Black City.

It was better than nothing.

I slept most of the way, and Michael woke me up when the announcement came in. They released us from our cells and we lined up to exit the ship. Michael and I talked to another man from the island about this, his name being Gordon. That was when we got our answers to what the heck had just happened.

The Game was over. It had ended prematurely. According to Gordon, the political situation over in the mainland cities had made the Amazon Game less profitable to maintain. There were talks of rebellion. Political sabotage. Powerful people had begun speaking out more against The Game to score political points. The pressure had been rising and the Puppeteers had finally pulled the plug on the whole thing. A city order had been passed to ship all The Game’s participants from the island and return them to their families. Several ships had been sent to the island to do this.

So much of it is complicated, and I hate politics so I barely understood it. But this meant one important thing for Mike and I. We were going home, but we weren’t getting the prize money. Nobody would get the prize money.

The moment I knocked on the door, Inna answered it immediately. She threw herself into me, her bouncy curls in my face. I hugged her and closed my eyes. That was when I felt like I could rest. Not the ship ride. Not the gathering of our belongings. Being here, now, surrounded by Mike and Inna, I felt like I could rest.

She welcomed Mike and I inside.

“I was waiting forever!” she said, sitting us down on the couch. She hugged me again as if afraid to lose me.

“We’re here now,” I said.

“It feels like I can finally breathe,” she said, tears in her eyes as she sat next to me. "What happened? Are you hurt?"

“We’ve been through so much,” Michael said, sitting next to us. "The things we've had to do... you wouldn't believe it."

“You don’t have to talk about it now,” she assured us. “I just want you both to settle in.”

"And we won jack shit," he said. A grimace came to his face. "We could’ve avoided all this.”

Those words repeated in my mind, but this time in a different voice. Hers. The island sun beat down on me. I was pressed against Coco’s sweaty skin, the side of my face smushed to her huge breast. Her strong arms forced me against her.

“You could’ve avoided all this if you’d just left me alone,” she hissed. “But you had to come back, didn’t you?” Her powerful hand closed around my dick.

“Kid?” Mike said, making me blink.

Just like that I was back in my house and off the island. The memory felt somehow too distant and too close at the same time. But I was back here, sitting on my couch. The hand on mine belonged to my girlfriend, not some monster. Michael and Inna looked at me with worried eyes.

“We’re fine,” I said, noticing her trembling arms. “We’re going to be fine.”

When I held her arm in my hands she looked me in the eyes. All three of us just sat with each other, comforting each other with our presence. We must have sat like that for hours.

Nothing would hurt us ever again.

Two weeks passed by in flashes. I got back into the routine of things, making dinner and doing chores as Inna made plans for how our real estate business would start. It was weird, not having to worry about being ambushed. It felt odd to have no enemies.

One night, Inna and I lay in bed together. Her head rested soundly on her pillow but I stared up at the ceiling.

“What is it, babe?” she asked, adorable in her pink sleeping gown.

A cold feeling seeped into me. “All the things that I did,” I said. “All the things that happened. And I have nothing to show for it.”

She put a hand on my chest. “I told you,” she said. “I don’t care about the prize money. All that matters is that you’re alive.”

“Yeah…” I said, not taking my eyes off the ceiling.

“Maybe,” she said. “Maybe you should try telling me about the island. That might help.”

I didn’t say anything. She withdrew her hand from my chest.

“Whatever it is,” she said in a soft tone. “You know I don’t like it when you shut me out. Let me help you.”

“I’m fine,” I said, closing my eyes. “I just need to rest.”

She sighed. “There was another threat of police crackdown earlier today,” she said.

“I know,” I said.

“It’s the fourth time this week,” she said, her voice growing hard. “A lot of my friends are talking about moving.”

“There’s no way things are that unsafe here,” I said, opening my eyes.

“Oh, there’s a way,” she said. “I went to the store yesterday and it was closed. Early.”

“They’re that afraid of getting looted?” I asked, turning to face her. She nodded.

“Things are changing. We need to think about starting real estate elsewhere. And we need to do it soon. They might crack down on borders again.”

“Seriously?” I asked, my heart speeding up with worry. The last thing we needed was to be trapped in this city. When she nodded I asked, “Where are you thinking we move?”

“The Underground Village.”

“I’ve never heard of that,” I said. “It doesn’t sound very safe.”

“I’ve looked into it,” Inna said, sitting up in the sheets. She smiled at the prospect. “Crime trends are low there. It had strife in years past but things are much safer. The population has grown and the economy is more diversified than it is here.”

“Sounds good to me,” I said. “Your plan is my plan.”

“Our plan,” she said, clasping my hand.

Despite my reassurances, Inna sensed something wrong with me. As the days trucked by, she asked questions about my time in The Game on a constant basis, and I was too chicken to answer in a direct and honest way.

Eventually she started talking to Michael and seeing him more often. Sometimes, when I was too busy to help Michael with things, Inna would step in for me. Around this time, she quit with the questions. Inna and Michael had some catching up to do after their long time apart. I knew how much Inna meant to him. She had helped him grieve after his brother died many years ago.

Around the time she and Michael started catching up, she gave me this journal and encouraged me to write in it. I suppose now that she wanted me to use it to write all the things that I can’t tell her. Right now she’s out helping him find a plumber for his clogged drain. That gave me a ton of time to finish writing in this thing.

Now that I’ve reached the end, I have to admit some things. It took me a while to do it, but I found a memorial for amazons killed in The Game. I read through it. The dead men had a memorial too, but I wasn’t interested in them.

I looked through the list of amazons to search for two names: Coco and Savannah. Both, of course, referred to the same woman. It was painstaking. There were almost sixty or so names on that plaque. However, her name was nowhere to be found. I saw her disappear into the darkness of that elevator shaft, yet her name wasn’t on the plaque.

So where does that leave me? I talked to people who had access to town records but couldn’t confirm her exact whereabouts. I got my hands on the records of the ship that brought us back to the city, so all I can confirm was that she wasn’t on the same ship as me. She must’ve been on one of the other ships. Either way, she’s somewhere out there.

As pathetic as it sounds, I’m glad I didn’t actually kill anyone. I thought I was prepared to do so when I signed up for this whole thing. It would be all in The Game. I thought I’d be able to live with it. In all honesty, I was wrong. I would not be able to live with that amazon’s blood on my hands. Maybe it’s because I don’t want anyone’s blood on my hands, not even that of my enemies. Or maybe it’s something more. She had children to return home to. Maybe that’s it. I’m just happy for her children. That’s that.

I haven’t told Michael she survived. I haven’t told Inna much of anything that happened on the island. I want them both to be at peace. They deserve it. Michael’s heart is light as a feather since he thinks the enemy is dead. And that’s what Coco was, right? An enemy. Michael knows that. It’s cut and dry to him.

Sometimes I wonder if she’s in the Black City. But as time passes, I doubt more and more that she is. If she was, she would’ve reached out by now. She’s too obsessed not to. It’s not that I want to see her here in town, but knowing that she is out there without me in the picture is odd.

I can’t get over that scream I heard inside the tower after I encountered her for the last time. Michael hadn’t heard it, but now that I know she survived I’m positive that scream was her. I imagine it was a scream of fury. Rage.

As sad as my life is after The Game, I can admit that there are things I miss about Coco. Sure, a mutually beneficial alliance wouldn’t make up for her almost killing my best friend. But after everything she did with me sexually, it’s hard not to think about her late at night in between the nightmares. That woman is somewhere out there and I’m pathetic enough to jerk off to her despite our treacherous time on the island.

Well, as they say, c’est la vie.

To be continued...

Well folks, this is the end of the first arc. There is a second one with twists and turns.
