What's your thoughts on nationality discrimination?

Non-Political News/Discussion

So I came across Hasan's response to the recent H3 lawsuit - Ethan Klein lost his copyright lawsuit. - and he said, to quote,

Sorry, gonna say it. This is Israel mindset. It's not shocking to me that his lawyer is a West Bank settler. It's not shocking to me that Ethan Klein loves Israel, because this is Israeli mindset!

Just... straight-up disparaging Israelis. Totally out of the blue. Just an excuse to disparage an entire nationality.

Unacceptable, right? Or, I think so. But there's lots of people that disagree. A lot. So there's two things I'm thinking about here.

1: How bad is discrimination based on nationality? Personally, I see it as bad as racism. Like, if someone were to say "this is a black person mindset" instead, I wouldn't see it as better or worse. I'd see it as someone making disparaging comments about someone based on generalisations of people with their origin. As a relevant example: I'm always on edge when someone starts saying "This anti-Israelis bashing is secretly code for anti-Jewish bashing", because the implication is that being simply anti-Israeli isn't as bad as being antisemitic. I think it's exactly as bad.

...But lots of people disagree. And I don't entirely get why. The only halfway-convincing argument is 'ethnic Jews don't have much in common with each other, but Israelis do, so one is more true than the other', but that... doesn't sound like it's what's convinced so many people.

2: Or, I say it's unacceptable, but there's cases where I do want to complain about a nation-wide cultural attitude or trait. For example: I think too many Indians are either accepting of or too quiet about the caste system. Better than it used to be, still needs work. Or, how about homophobia in a country like - picking a country at random - Nigeria? Nigerians on average have a homophobia problem, I don't think I should be quiet about it. ...I know there's a big difference in just wording, between that and saying "Bashing gays is Nigerian mindset" - one of them's respectful, the other's not - but is that really that large of a difference? Or is it that that's fine, because it's discussing a demonstrable problem, while generic negative these-guys-are-hypocrites stereotypes are not? That still doesn't feel right though...

So... I dunno. I'm interested to hear what you guys think.
