Qi Zheng gifts dried orchid flowers to both Wei Ying and Yan Jiang as a symbol of his trust in them, a tradition unique to the Qi family. In return, both men pledge their utmost loyalty to Qi Zheng and to root out the traitor responsible for poisoning Fan Yun's wine. Just then, Gao Ran walks past, prompting a strange expression from Qi Zheng.
Fan Yun informs Qi Zheng that she wishes to return home after learning that someone has purchased her private school, but concerned for her safety, he refuses her request. Unable to reveal the real reason because of the spies within the residence, he instead claims that he simply enjoys her company and wants her to stay. Frustrated by his refusal, Fan Yun storms off.
Meanwhile, one of Lou Qiyan's subordinates reports back with information about Fan Yun's background, including the fact that she has recently married Qi Zheng. Lou Qiyan, however, remains dismissive of Qi Zheng and view him as an incompetent ruler.
Qi Zheng's day only gets worse when Lord Zheng Yuan once again pressures him to raise taxes in order to replenish the treasury. Changing the subject, Qi Zheng asks whether he can hold a martial arts tournament to assess the capabilities of the Guardian Corps. He remains persistent despite Zheng Yuan's repeated objections that the treasury is already nearly depleted, even offering to cut down his allowance.
Wei Shisan is in the middle of stealing Wei Ying's access badge when she is caught red-handed. When she finds out that Wei Ying is heading to the Qi Residence, she immediately invites herself along for another chance to see Gao Ran. Awwww, the way Dai Lu Wa clings to Wei Ying and begs to tag along is absolutely adorable. To no one's surprise, Wei Ying refuses. Spotting her other brother nearby, Wei Shisan promptly abandons her current strategy and runs off to recruit Wei Rong's help instead.
Meanwhile, Qi Zheng appears to have grown increasingly suspicious of Gao Ran's true identity. Under the pretext of organizing a martial arts tournament, he challenges Gao Ran to a duel. During the match, it becomes apparent that Gao Ran's swordsmanship bears a striking resemblance to that of Qi Zheng's second brother, Qingyuan, who was exiled following the bloody succession struggle among the Qi siblings.
Qi Zheng ultimately loses the duel, but the outcome seems to matter less than what he has learned from it. As Gao Ran steps down from the stage, Lord Zheng Yuan is shown wearing a peculiar expression as well, almost as if he too suspects that Gao Ran is not who he claims to be.
Unable to ignore his suspicions any longer, Qi Zheng follows Gao Ran and finally confronts him directly about his true identity. Admitting how much he misses his older brother, Qi Zheng vows to return the City Lord position to its rightful owner. Gao Ran, however, continues to deny everything. He insists that he is not Qingyuan and declares that Qingyuan no longer exists.

Overcome with emotion, Qi Zheng rushes forward and embraces Gao Ran, who returns the hug. Although Gao Ran still refuses to admit that he is Qingyuan, Qi Zheng speaks as though he is addressing Qingyuan's spirit, promising that he will become a respectable and worthy City Lord. Gao Ran merely smiles in response.
Still reeling from the discovery that Gao Ran is his long-lost second brother, Qi Zheng remains unusually subdued, even around Fan Yun. During their conversation, he learns that Gao Ran was adopted into the Fan family 13 years ago during a devastating famine. According to Fan Yun, Gao Ran was on the verge of starving to death when her father, Fan Qi, took him in and raised him as his own son.
Meanwhile, Qi Zheng notices that Fan Yun has been coughing frequently and grows concerned about her health. Suspecting that something in her chamber may be causing her symptoms, his attention is drawn to the inkstone on her desk. That night, he secretly tests the residue from the inkstone and discovers that it has indeed been poisoned.
Wei Shisan moves into Fan Yun's chamber under the pretext of strengthening their newfound friendship. In reality, she has been blackmailed by Qi Zheng, who has figured out that she has an enormous crush on Gao Ran and is using that knowledge to recruit her into his plan lol.
Later that evening, after spending hours chatting with Fan Yun about childhood memories involving Gao Ran, Wei Shisan waits until Fan Yun grows tired before quietly slipping away to pour a mysterious powder into the poisoned inkstone. I'm assuming it's something to neutralise the poison effects.
Not long afterward, Su Yin enters the room to attend to Fan Yun, but Wei Shisan quickly sends her away. When Fan Yun looks confused by her behavior, Wei Shisan subtly hints that Su Yin may not be someone she should trust. At this point, I am begging someone, anyone, to sit Fan Yun down and tell her that the suspicious maid who keeps hovering around her is, in fact, suspicious. The number of people who know Su Yin is up to no good seems to be growing by the episode, while Fan Yun remains blissfully unaware.
Wei Ying reports to Qi Zheng that Fan Yun's private school was purchased by Juyun Pavilion, which, for reasons unknown, refuses to sell it back. He then mentions that Fan Yun borrowed Wei Shisan's access badge and has left for home. Wei Ying's brilliant solution is to dispatch Yan Jiang, a man with absolutely no sense of direction, to follow her. A worried Qi Zheng decides to search for Fan Yun himself.
At Qingzhuang Academy, Fan Yun is invited to meet Lou Qiyan. Lou Qiyan has clearly developed an interest in her. When Fan Yun plays the erhu for him, he is captivated by both her skill and the performance itself. In a surprisingly generous move, he hands over the deed to the school and promises to grant her one favor each time she plays the erhu for him in the future. Just then, Qi Zheng bursts into Fuyun Pavilion and essentially tells Lou Qiyan to keep his hands off his wife.
During the carriage ride back to the Qi Residence, Fan Yun manages to soothe a visibly jealous Qi Zheng. The conversation soon turns to Lord Zheng Yuan's proposal to raise taxes, prompting Fan Yun to bring Qi Zheng to Alley Literary Teahouse so that he can hear firsthand how ordinary citizens feel about the prospect of increased taxation.
Later, Fan Yun asks Qi Zheng whether he would reconsider the proposal. Qi Zheng gives an ambiguous answer, but Fan Yun reveals that she can see through his facade. She tells him that despite his carefree act, she can tell that he genuinely cares about the welfare of the people. Curious, Qi Zheng asks why she continues to help him despite the dangers involved. Fan Yun replies that this is exactly what she wants to do and that he is welcome to make use of her abilities.
As it turns out, Qi Zheng does raise taxes, but not in the way everyone expected. Instead of burdening the common people, he imposes higher taxes on officials and nobles, causing an uproar among the upper echelons of society. During the court session, Lord Zheng Yuan openly criticizes the reform, but Lord Lyu speaks in support of Qi Zheng. Seizing the opportunity, Qi Zheng goes on to propose establishing trade routes between the cities, hilariously claiming that his late father appeared in a dream and gave him the idea.
Back at home, Lord Zheng Yuan laments that Qi Zheng is becoming increasingly difficult to control and is unfit to rule. During his conversation with his steward, he reveals that when Qi Hua was still alive, the son he favored most was actually Qingyuan, a.k.a. Gao Ran.
Meanwhile, Fan Yun is distracted by the revelation that someone has been poisoning her. Alone in her chamber, she wonders who could possibly be responsible. I mean... Fan Yun. My girl. There are only about 3 people who regularly enter your room, and one of them has been acting suspiciously for multiple episodes now.
Not long afterward, Su Yin attempts to administer another dose of poison, only to be caught red-handed by Wei Ying. She is brought before Qi Zheng for questioning but refuses to reveal who ordered the assassination attempt, insisting that she acted alone. I had error 404 trying to understand her logic. "Is My Lady alright? I poisoned her, but I didn't actually want her to die!" Ma'am, what exactly did you think poison was supposed to do?
Before Qi Zheng can get any useful answers out of her, he suddenly hears a disturbance coming from Fan Yun's room. He rushes over to discover that Fan Yun has been kidnapped.
As a search party is assembled, Qi Zheng receives an anonymous note instructing him to go to Linglong Tower alone if he wishes to see Fan Yun alive again. He immediately dispatches Wei Ying to notify Fan Qi. In a flashback, Qi Zheng pieces together clues that Fan Qi is actually Dark Wolf. He confronts Fan Qi and calls him by his true identity.
When Fan Qi initially denies it, Qi Zheng points to the withered phoenix tree growing in the Fan Residence and compares it to the current state of the Nine Cities. Appealing to Fan Qi's sense of duty, he hopes to have Dark Wolf's help in the future. Back in the present, Fan Qi finally casts aside his reluctance and summons the assassins of the Dark Wolf organization and sets out to rescue Fan Yun. Not gonna lie, the image of mild-mannered Fan Qi suddenly turning into the leader of a legendary assassin organization is one of the coolest reveals, both in the drama and the anime version.

Ofc it's Lord Zheng Yuan behind Fan Yun's kidnapping. Arriving alone at Linglong Tower, Qi Zheng gets a chance to show off his martial prowess. Our City Lord proceeds to kick an impressive number of asses. Seriously, there must have been at least 30 assassins there. Which naturally raises the question: where on earth are Wei Ying and the rest of the Guardian Corps? Did Qi Zheng really turn up alone?
As it turns out, Zheng Yuan's motive for kidnapping Fan Yun may have been to lure Gao Ran out into the open. Gao Ran soon appears before him, and Zheng Yuan addresses him as Second Young Master Qi. However, Gao Ran once again denies being Qingyuan and instead publicly declares his loyalty to Qi Zheng, insisting that Qi Zheng is the rightful and capable ruler of the Nine Cities.
Through an analogy involving peach and plum trees, Zheng Yuan makes his intentions abundantly clear. He believes Gao Ran should replace Qi Zheng as City Lord and has never truly accepted Qi Zheng's position.
Meanwhile, Qi Zheng cuts his way through the assassins and finally reaches Fan Yun. Unfortunately, she is injured while shielding him from an attack. Just as things look dire, Daddy Fan Qi arrives in full Dark Wolf mode to save the day, while Wei Ying and his men remain conspicuously absent.
A more pressing question, however, is how Dark Wolf's assassins are able to distinguish friend from foe when both sides are dressed entirely in black. Oh wait. Dark Wolf's men have hoods. Never mind. Mystery solved.
Back at the Qi Residence, Lord Jiang Shu from the Commerce Ministry is summoned to treat Fan Yun's injuries. After examining her, he gravely announces that her condition is critical and that only Bai Ling, a miraculous herb capable of neutralizing poison and repairing damaged muscles and bones, can save her. Determined to find the herb, Qi Zheng sets out with Gao Ran and Wei Ying. Unfortunately, their search yields nothing, leaving Qi Zheng increasingly anxious and frustrated.
Elsewhere, the assassins responsible for kidnapping Fan Yun get their asses kicked for a second time by Lou Qiyan lol. Lou Qiyan appears furious for two reasons: first, because they injured Fan Yun, and second, because they had the audacity to describe her as merely average-looking.
Juyun Pavilion may secretly be operating as the Shadow Slay League, or perhaps Shadow Slay League is simply another organization controlled by Lou Qiyan. Either way, our merchant-scholar-thug definitely has far more resources and influence than he lets on.
Back at the Qi Residence, Qi Zheng personally attends to Fan Yun. I think it's safe to say that our City Lord has become deeply attached to her. In fact, judging from his behavior throughout these episodes, I would argue that he's already fallen hard. A maidservant arrives with Bai Ling herb sent by Fan Qi, effectively saving Fan Yun's life.
Qi Zheng attempts to feed her the medicinal soup, but the problem is that Fan Yun is unconscious. After several unsuccessful attempts, Qi Zheng arrives at what he apparently considers a brilliant solution: he drinks the medicine himself and transfers it to her through a kiss. ...What? I'm sorry. I know this scene is supposed to be romantic, but I found it a little off-putting lol
Lou Qiyan later arrives at the Qi Residence in his Zheng Shi persona carrying the very same herb, only to discover that Qi Zheng has already obtained it. Clutching the box a little too tightly, Lou Qiyan looks visibly disappointed. Our love triangle starts earlier than expected.
Later, Qi Zheng meets with Fan Qi and once again addresses him as Dark Wolf. He asks whether Fan Qi finally trusts him. In response, Fan Qi returns the paper knife to Qi Zheng and pledges his loyalty, giving Qi Zheng yet another powerful ally in his corner.
When Fan Yun finally regains consciousness, she thanks Qi Zheng for finding the Bai Ling herb. Qi Zheng corrcts her and tells her that it was Dark Wolf who found it. He then admits that because she risked her life to protect him, he now knows that she genuinely cares for him. In turn, he promises that he will look after her from now on. Fan Yun is visibly caught off guard by this declaration and promptly chokes on her soup. As Qi Zheng feeds her the medicine again, a memory of him feeding her medicine by kissing her suddenly flashes through her mind.
Thoughts:
Episodes 4–6 are considerably stronger than the opening episodes because the plot finally begins to gain momentum through a series of major developments. Within the span of just a few episodes, we learn the truth about Fan Qi and Gao Ran's identities, witness Fan Yun's kidnapping, see Qi Zheng recruit Fan Qi, Wei Ying, and Yan Jiang into his growing inner circle, and watch him take his first steps toward openly challenging Zheng Yuan's influence.
The deeper we get into the story, the more it feels as though everyone is hiding a secret. Fan Qi turns out to be Dark Wolf. Lou Qiyan appears to have ties to yet another mysterious organization. Gao Ran may be Qingyuan. Almost everyone seems to be concealing a second identity or hidden allegiance. Fan Yun remains one of the few completely sincere characters in the story, which may explain why even Lou Qiyan end up gravitating toward her.
I have mixed feelings about the pacing of the romance. On one hand, Qi Zheng's growing attachment to Fan Yun makes sense because she has repeatedly demonstrated loyalty, sincerity, and concern for both him and the people. On the other hand, I still feel that he falls for her a little too quickly. This is a man who grew up amid betrayal, political intrigue, and a bloody succession struggle. Personally, I would have preferred a slower progression where trust develops over a longer period of time. But tbf, I remember I had the same thought when I was watching the anime version.
Am I the only one who finds Lou Qiyan's growing interest in Fan Yun a little abrupt? They've had relatively limited interaction, so I'm not quite seeing what has him so captivated already. Curiosity and admiration, sure. But if the drama is trying to sell romantic feelings, I feel like it needs a bit more development.
I want to rave just how much I like Dai Lu Wa's scenes! She's just so genuine and sassy! I love how she's a bundle of energy. Every time she appears, she brings a sense of liveliness and chaos, like when she's pestering Wei Ying, recruiting Wei Rong into her latest scheme, or finding creative excuses to get closer to Gao Ran. Her affection for Gao Ran is endearing and our girl makes zero attempt to hide how she feels.

It's easy to dismiss her as a lovestruck young lady, but there's actually more to her than that and I think Qi Zheng picks up on that when he recruits her to stay at Fan Yun's chamber. Beneath the bubbly personality, Wei Shisan is surprisingly perceptive.
