I finally figured out why Rue’s ending makes me so angry. And I call BS on Sam Levinson for it!

Discussion

Killing Rue was always going to devastate viewers. But I do not think most of us expected a happy ending for her anyway. If anything, Season 2 felt like a natural stopping point. Rue saying she stayed clean for the summer gave just enough closure without pretending everything was magically okay. It left her future uncertain, which actually felt honest.

We all knew relapse was likely. We knew things could get worse. That is what made her story feel real.

What does not sit right with me is the reasoning behind her death compared to what we were actually shown.

If the intention was to make a statement about how dangerous fentanyl is and how addiction can kill, then why did Season 3 not really show that reality? Rue’s life felt strangely removed from the chaos and messiness of addiction that defined her character before. It did not feel like we were watching someone actively struggling in the same way.

And then instead of her story ending as a consequence of addiction, which would have aligned with that message, she is murdered. That is what makes it feel so disconnected.

You cannot frame her death as a statement about addiction and then not follow through narratively. It ends up feeling less like an honest conclusion to her arc and more like shock value that contradicts what the show spent two seasons building.

That is why it does not just feel sad. It feels frustrating. Curious if others feel like the intent and execution did not line up here, especially on rewatch.
