How can I be supportive?
Hello, I try to do a fair bit of reading on here to try and maybe grasp common experiences and coping strategies. However, I do understand no experience is the same and how there’s many levels to this, I don’t have CMT personally, however someone important to me does.
The first period where we were close I had thought I had done my best to be supportive, and now as time has passed between us and our connection seems to potentially be on the uprise, I just want to know how some of you may feel is the best way to be supportive?
I initially tried to not be overbearing, didn’t really make a deal out of their struggles or issues but rather made sure to always reassure them that anything their CMT caused them - pain, fatigue, etc did not bother me and that I would always understand.
However, I felt that somehow that wasn’t enough. It may be a personal worry that holds no value but for those who have CMT, I was just wondering is there a way you wish for someone to go about your struggles?
Their complications with CMT aren’t labelled severe, but definitely can impact daily life and after so long of multiple days of strain, it can be intense. I would try to do little, subtle things when I noticed they were in pain. I’d run them a bath, “playfully” massage their legs, but somehow I felt I was missing out on something I could do.
They never told me anything I did was wrong or lacking, but I want to know if I end up going back into this - is there any more I could do?
