French student visa expired, pending residency permit, will border control likely let me go in on a US 90 day tourist stay?

I have lived in Paris for the last year and my visa expires at the end of July. Prior to leaving France I applied for my first residency permit. I applied for it late, the first week of July (due to my fault) and I had to return to the US for an exam. So far I haven't received any update on my application from ANEF.

I have a flight scheduled back to France for mid August. Is it likely that I'll receive my Attestation de Prolongation d'Instruction by that time? And if not, what is the likelihood France border control will let me into the country on a 90 day tourist stay (I have a US passport) without the proper documents and a pending residency permit? Or would flying to another country other than France help with this and then taking a train into Paris?

Please let me know, I am incredibly stressed about whether I'll be blocked from traveling to France and don't know a lot about the visa process (thus my stupid mistake applying for it so late).
