My cat wants to play but doesn't play?

General Advice

Hi all, (25, USA) cat (neutered M13) has a favorite toy that he loves to play with--just a feather wand. Whenever he wants to play, he'll stand in the same spot and meow at me, and he gets excited when I pick up the wand to play with him. As recently as a month ago, he would immediately start running and jumping after the toy, but lately he hasn't been doing that. He'll find a spot to watch it, usually hidden such as under the bed, but he never actually moves or tries to catch it. If I stop moving it for awhile, he'll eventually come out, give me a look, sniff it, and bat at it like he wants it to start moving... but if I move it, he'll just go back under the bed and never try to catch it. He's usually really "aggressive" when he catches it, really kicks it and gives it a kill bite and everything, so I don't think he's satisfied by just sniffing it.

Is this unusual or a sign of him getting older? I know he wants to play, and it seems like he's expecting to catch it, so I'm not sure why he doesn't go for it. I tried switching out the feather attachment for a fur attachment and he enjoyed that one for awhile--after a month or so he seemed to lose interest, so I switched it back to the feather, but his behavior hasn't changed. Maybe he wants a different wand entirely? I'm also in the process of moving, but I didn't start packing until after he stopping playing, so I'm not sure if that's the cause.
